Album Review
Howie Day began his career as an experimental songwriter, using loop pedals and digital effects to turn his guitar into a lush, layered instrument. Even when the material wasn't top-notch, his solo shows frequently were, and Day sharpened his act by canvassing the college circuit for years. Following his signing to Epic Records, he streamlined his approach, taking the spotlight away from his acoustic guitar and focusing instead on smooth, massively orchestrated pop/rock — and 2003'sStop All the World Now went gold as a result. Sound the Alarm follows in those steps, featuring 11 songs that brim with studio polish and mega-sized hooks. Tracks were composed with a handful of collaborators in L.A., New York, London, Minneapolis, and Bloomington, and the results are prime radio fodder, even if two of the best numbers here — the piano ballad "Everybody Loves to Love a Lie" and the Verve-influenced "Counting on Me" — are the album's most unconventional songs.

Howie's voice comes through, but album is lacking a bit
My first thought was "Ohhh Howie, what did they do to your music??" Of course, the Howie fans from the "old days" tend to appreciate his older material, the more acoustic sound and of course the art of his looping techniques. I was excited when I heard Howie play "So Stung," "Longest Night," and "Sound the Alarm" during his brief tour over 18 months ago and "Be There" in 2005. "So Stung" has a beautiful opening, but this song along with "Longest Night" and "Be There" just sound too damn poppy. Acoustic versions would be so much better. "Sound the Alarm" was one that I was anticipating, and the piano is absolutely amazing in the beginning. Once the band kicks in, it takes it down a notch for me. Plus, a whole line is missing?? What happened to "I don't know if I can turn from every bridge that I have burned, to over come a sense of loss, we've gained so much at such a cost"?? I loved that line. Seem like the song has one line and a chorus. I completely enjoy "No Longer What You Require," "40 Hours," and "Everyone Loves to Love a Lie." These versions work for me, but the rest I enjoy much better from the recorded live shows. What can I say, I think less is more with Howie...but I've been a dedicated fan of this obviously talented artist for over 8 years, and I doubt anything can change that - the soul of his music is still very present and he makes you feel it. Keep rockin HKD.
Holy Howie!
I was not real impressed with the musicality of this album. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been following Howie for at least 9 years (when he used to be a one man band) and I have come to expect more than this from him. His music seems to be going a bit mainstream to me and less of that original sound he used to have. I will continue to support his music but I hope he will find his old self again!
Great album! Totally worth the wait!
This album is going to relate to alot of people. It does with me. Songs like "No Longer What You Require" and "Sound The Alarm" are instant hits. They are great live. If this album isn't working for you then there is something wrong with your ears, and I suggest that you get them checked asap, shoot I'll even pay for you! Hahaha. I can't wait for howie to come to Fresno in the 19th! Boo-yeah!!
