Pure Excellence.

I only really became a Karnivool fan about a month ago, but I am a trained musician and drummer of 12 years. I know music very well; most of my time for the past decade has been spent listening to Tool, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, and a few others in addition to some classical and jazz. I seem to recall that Karnivool said this album was going to be less technical and more fluid. It is actually MORE technical and more fluid. Certainly, there is more feeling on this album than on Themata, and the music sounds much more natural.

Sound Awake is an album that achieves a rare combination of musical intellect, precision, and emotion. Every member of the band shines in every song. The dissonant melodies are there, the rhythmic complexity is there. Everything about this album just feels great, and it's rewarding to listen to. With Sound Awake, Karnivool deserves to be mentioned among the ranks of prog rock/metal pioneers, like the 3 bands I mentioned earlier, despite the fact that this is only their second album. They have evolved considerably since Themata, and the direction they have taken is very bold, but impressive because they pulled it off so well. The dynamics of Sound Awake are those of a much more mature band; the ambience and the quiet, heart-felt moments add the touch and the genuine feeling that Themata lacked on a certain level. Themata showed that Karnivool had potential; Sound Awake proves that they are actually challenging themselves to reach that potential and BE great, something that is rare in this world of Green Days and Nicklebacks.

Buy this album immediately. You will not regret it. The Australian rock/metal scene is deserving of more recognition than it currently receives, and Karnivool are proof of that.

Beyond epic

Karnivool is one of my favorite bands, you never hear bands like this on the radio, that's why I never listen to it. Karnivool is a unique band and kicks rap music out of history, AMEN

Aural Decadence

I could spend hours dribbling on and on about this album. EVERY track is sonic brilliance. Atmospheric, intense, emotional, elevating. Amazing replay value, surprising depth of lyrics, and impressive musicianship. This album deserves adulation of the highest level. Buy it now. You won't regret it. You'll simply melt when your ears intake the lush melodies and spectalur progressions of these songs.

Karnivool started out as a high school band in 1997, playing parties around Perth focusing on covers of Nirvana and Carcass with a handful of original songs thrown into the mix. After a year of this, singer Ian Kenny decided to change the focus to purely original material, getting rid of the original bandmembers — who had been called "a bunch of clowns" around Perth, hence the name Karnivool — and recruiting guitarists Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking, bass player Jon Stockman, and drummer...
