iTunes Review
Despite its title, Sound of Defeat has nothing of the scent of failure about it. Until June infuse this EP with a tingling, melodrama-laced sound with obvious roots in modern Britpop. Singer/pianist Josh Ballard seems to have absorbed lessons from the Chris Martin school of falsetto — although there are also hints of the Beach Boys and similar ‘60s groups in his vocal style as well. In any case, he and band mates Brad Ballard (guitar) and Daniel Dempsey (drums) boil down their influences into songs of pure yearning and desire, with Christian intimations present below the surface. “The Man Who Lost His Soul” rides a jaunty Latin-accented groove while touching upon a Bible-based message. “Baby (Hope You Understand)” and “The World Ends Tonight” find Josh pining away at the peak of his vocal range, transcending ordinary heartache into something ethereal. Brad’s vigorous guitar strums give the title tune a propulsive, Edge-esque shimmer. Best of all is “In My Head,” a visionary love song of both delicacy and strength.

The best new band of 2009
Truly compelling, catchy, and heartfelt music. This is one band that I sincerely believe has everything it takes to make it huge and this latest EP does not disappoint. Great song writing, music, lyrics and a great live performance from 3 talented guys. If you love discovering new original sounding bands and music where EVERY track on the CD is great, then this is it. Another absolutely solid project by a band that deserves success on their fresh musical merit. 'Man who lost his Soul' is a already screaming to become a hit. 'Baby' brings an honest heartfelt pain which you can literally feel in Ballard's vocals. The only downfall of this project is that it leaves you wanting more than just 6 tracks. By the way, if you love this you'll be addicted to their first self titled release as well. Superbly well done UNTIL JUNE!
Sound of Defeat, there IS still good music out there...
The music UNTIL JUNE creates needs to be discovered and appreciated by more than just the fans who were lucky and fortunate enough to stumble upon them on Pandora (like I did). I sincerely hope their songs achieve due status and perhaps a regular spot on the radio. SOD, although short in length, is very abundant in it's quality and ultimately leaves the listener fulfilled. The opening track, the obvious choice for a radio single, is introspective and sterling in it's theme and is a noticeable development in their sound and song production. "Baby" is beautiful perfection with it's winsome, lovelorn vocals, intriguing lyrics, and a melody that is simplistic yet captivating. They stick to the formula (which isn't a bad thing) in "The World Ends Tonight" which undoubtedly brings listeners back to the catchy hook from "Sleepless" from their self-titled effort. "Nobody Knows You" is a bit more stripped yet it retains it's intended intimacy, evocative of earlier Coldplay, both in melody and vocals. The only criticism I can offer is that I wish it had been a full-length album. Hopefully this is a just a foretelling of something bigger or better to come... Overall, 20 min of great listening.
Until June, Solid in May
I have been listening to the 6 track EP steadily over the last month. It's addicting! Great upbeat songs like "The Man Who Lost his Soul" and "Sound of Defeat" will please the casual listeners of there freshman album "Until June", while tracks like "Baby (Hope You Understand)" and "Nobody Knows You" will please die-hard fans. This is a great EP for anyone who loves their high-pitched sound and deep lyrics. I would like to see them one day sing about something other than loneliness, but hey, it is the "Sound of Defeat" right? Great Album! Looking forward to more from this terrific band.
