Album Review

Following Mark Olson's amicable departure, the remaining Jayhawks reconvened under the direction of Gary Louris to record Sound of Lies, the band's most ambitious album to date. Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a subtle grace and power, proving that the Jayhawks remain a distinctive band without Olson.

An All-Time Classic!

The Sound of Lies is an album I find myself listening to repeatedly over the years. Not only is it the best Jayhawk album, but it's one of my all time favorites. When the chips are down, I find myself humming songs like "Trouble" and "Haywire." While there are some forgettable tracks like "Big Star" and "Poor Little Fish", overall this album is a strong collection of soul nurturing music. Give it a listen! I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Amazing Album!!!

Many Jayhawks fans overlook this album since it was their first album without Mark Olsen. However, I think it is one of their best, if not the absolute best. This album represents a transition from a country/bluegrass sound to more straight-ahead alternative rock. Songs like "Think About It", "Poor Little Fish", and "Sixteen Down" are heavily influenced by psychedelic rock, where other songs like "It's Up To You" and "Stick In The Mud" give a nod to their country backgrounds. If you have never heard The Jayhawks before, get this album along with "Smile". Both are excellent classics.

a much overlooked masterpiece

I think this is, artistically, is the best jayhawks album-as far as making a lasting musical statement; and similar to most albums like it, was very under-appreciated and commercially overlooked.
