Album Review

This CD reissue features Oliver Nelson in two very different settings. Although best-known as an altoist and a tenor-saxophonist, Nelson sticks exclusively to soprano throughout the set. He leads a 20-piece big band on three of his compositions which, although interesting, are not overly memorable. Best are five other numbers (two of which were originally issued on the record Three Dimensions) that showcase Nelson's soprano playing with a quartet also includes pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Ron Carter and drumer Grady Tate. Although one would not think of Nelson as a soprano stylist, his strong playing actually put him near the top of his field on such numbers as "The Shadow Of Your Smile," "Straight No Chaser" and his own "Patterns."

Wonderful Album!

Oliver Nelson is one of my favorites! He is probably better remembered for his television show and movie scores. The one thing that is needed for the jazz albums is liner notes! Musicians like to know who the sidemen are.

One of Nelson's Best

If you buy one recording by Oliver Nelson, other than "Blues and the Abstract Truth," this is it. Nelson is a musical architect of the first order. His solos are object lessons of first rate improvisation (just ask Jamey Aebersold). Nelson was also a highly accomplished arranger and, along with Quincy Jones and Benny Carter, one of the few African Americans to break through the color line in Hollywood (he took over writing music for the television series "Ironside" from Q). It's just too bad he passed away at an early age. To think what he would have accomplished. (By the way, the price of this recording on Itunes is a steal. If you buy a hard copy, it could easily run in excess of $50, and that's only if you can locate a copy.)

WONDERFUL, EXCITING BIG BAND AND QUARTET OLIVER NELSON SESSIONS

One of composer/arranger/sax star Oliver Nelson's best recordings featuring his 21 piece BIG band (in LA) and his quartet (in NYC) featuring Steve Kuhn, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate. Nelson's soprano sax is amazing on "Sound Piece" and "Shadow of Your Smile" with Kuhn & Co dazzles. "Straight No Chaser" and "Example 78" are bonus tracks not on the original LP. Enjoy!! Another great player has left the bandstand and is really missed!!! One of Oliver Nelson's BEST works!!

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s

Oliver Nelson was a distinctive soloist on alto, tenor, and even soprano, but his writing eventually overshadowed his playing skills. He became a professional early on in 1947, playing with the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra and with St. Louis big bands headed by George Hudson and Nat Towles. In 1951, he arranged and played second alto for Louis Jordan's big band, and followed with a period in the Navy and four years at a university. After moving to New York, Nelson worked briefly with Erskine Hawkins,...
