iTunes Review
Over four years, from 1983 to 1987, the Smiths produced an enduring catalog that included four studio albums and a slew of singles and b-sides often collected on a variety of compilation albums. This 2008 collection, overseen by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, collects 23 tracks in its “single-disc” edition and an additional 22 tracks, including B-sides, exclusive 12-inch releases and live recordings, for the “two-disc” expanded version. Taken either way, it’s an embarrassment of riches, as Johnny Marr’s lyrical guitar riffs supply the empathetic poetry necessary to support Morrissey’s emotionally charged lyrical concerns. From shameless self-pity to rampant narcissism, unrelieved sorrow to bursts of temporary joy, the Smiths took adolescence and channeled its hormonal wildness into gorgeous pop songs. The two-minute nightclub apocalypse of “Panic,” the wallflower ennui of “Ask,” and the sublime damp futures of “William, It Was Really Nothing” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” highlight the flow of The Smiths’ unrelenting single releases, while the majesty of such b-sides as “Half A Person,” “Girl Afraid,” and the live versions of “Meat is Murder” and “London,” attest to the group’s fully formed strengths.

Say what you will about re-packaging...
But this looks to be the only place to get some of these songs using iTunes. Let's face it, The Smiths were one of the greatest bands of their generation and iTunes has a glaring hole where they should have their full albums and singles. Until they fill that void, this will have to suffice. Fortunately for us, this is a great collection and a great introduction to The Smiths. Here's hoping that iTunes puts the rest of their discography (in iTunes Plus please!) and let's just keep in mind that this is among the best music by far to be released or repackaged or whatever to grace iTunes in recent memory.
Hey?
What happened to the original albums? It is those albums that I am interested in buying!!!! This is a great album for the new Smiths listener, but I have listened to The Smiths for years and years there are the more obscure tracks that I am trying to find. So what's up itunes? Can you try to get some of the other albums or what?
Nevermind the bollocks, here come The Smiths!
At long last, we finally have the music of The Smiths, THE BEST British indie band of the 1980's. This is a band I've come to know and love in the past year. What longtime listeners will hear in this set is familiar; what the newcomers will hear is the complex, jangly guitar arrangements of guitarist Johnny Marr (who some might know as the new member of the Portland, OR alternative band Modest Mouse), backed by the brilliant writing and singing of singer Morrissey, who sings lyrics and songs of lonlieness and despair that, frankly, anybody can relate to. Critics have called The Smiths one of the most important alternative rock bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s, and the group has had major influence on subsequent artists. Morrissey's lovelorn tales of alienation found an audience amongst youth culture bored by the ubiquitous synthesizer-pop bands of the early 1980s, while Marr's complex melodies helped return guitar-based music to popularity. Yes, The Smiths have had countless compilations released since their demise, but this one (and the Deluxe Edition version) is noteworthy for Morrissey and Marr's collaboration. Morrissey coined the title, and Johnny Marr was in charge of the remastering and tracklisting. I've read yesterday that Marr hopes to have the studio albums remastered the right way, as well. I second that wholeheartedly. If you care about music, then go ahead, buy this, but I recommend the Deluxe Edition version of this compilation. Such timeless music to be heard here, and kudos to iTunes for FINALLY putting The Smiths in the store. They really needed it here.
