Ahmed Drief is a storyteller in Sounds of Morocco. Nearly purely instrumental, this album will evoke your imagination from its first first track through its last. I went from images of a busy, outdoor market (Sounds of Morocco) to a dark cave and hypnotic gypsies (Haunted House) to a man and women dancing the tango in a dune field (The Moon and Us). Rhythmic and full of mystery and intrigue, this album also got soul (The Moon and Us, Lamma Bada) and a twist of electronica. Sounds of Morocco is sensational, literaly.

I just listened to “Sounds of Morocco” and here’s what I think: Marrakech: the power of Darbuka (Eddaka) a la Issawa would take you to Jamaa Elfna, it kind of reminds me of Gnawa-Issawa style (Moroccan Jazz). Sahara Desert: this piece is reminiscent of a thousand and one arabian nights. Nice solo exchange between Oud and violin. Maghrebian Night: I love the way this song starts with Bandeer typical of Berber from Moroccan Atlas and Algeria and it fits perfectly with the drums (real fusion). Sounds of Morocco: I can’t even find a way to describe it (Return to innocence by Enigma!) just beautiful. Haunted house: very nice fusion between Oriental melodies, tabla and occidental drums. Very exotic and deep voice.

This is a great album. This new version of "Lamma Bada" is so creative and wonderful, it's my favorite version. My favorite song on the album is "Arabic Wedding" because it's exactly what you would hear in the middle of a great night dancing with everyone. I also like "Marrakech" a lot; it whisks you away to the marketplace in seconds. Even if this isn't the type of music you listen to everyday, it is great to put on while studying, relaxing or just hanging out. The guitar solos are great, ad the beat is contagious. Definitely gets stuck in your head!! I love it!!
