Album Review

Most '90s rock bands who enjoyed massive breakthrough success with their debut album seemed to follow it up with an effort similarly styled to its predecessor, hence guaranteeing repeat success. This proved not to be the case with Blind Melon. It appeared as though the band rejected the jovial spirit of No Rain and focused on much darker material for their follow-up, Soup. While it did not match the commercial success of the debut, Soup proved to be a challenging, gripping record that is just as strong and perhaps even more rewarding. Shannon Hoon was in the throes of drug addiction (which would prove fatal only two months after the album's release), and his experience at a drug detox is clearly detailed in the Zep-groover, "2x4." Hoon's lyrics often examine his growing sense of mortality, as evidenced in "The Duke," "St. Andrew's Fall," and "Car Seat," while "New Life" shows Hoon hoping that the birth of his baby daughter will put his life back on track. The country-tinged "Skinned" is written from the standpoint of notorious killer, Ed Gein, the anthemic rocker, "Galaxie," appears to deal with a troubled relationship, and "Vernie" is a tribute to his grandmother. Some of the tracks prove hopeful ("Walk"), while others are steeped in despair ("Toes Across the Floor," "Wilt"). Soup deserved to be another big hit, but due to MTV and radio's abrupt abandonment of the band, harsh reviews from close-minded critics, and worst of all, Hoon's untimely death mid-tour, all hopes of the album receiving the attention it deserved were extinguished. Soup is one of the most underrated and overlooked great rock albums of the '90s.

Kick A.. Album

When this album came out I just wasn't into Blind Melon because it did not have the same Metal / Electric sounds that many of the popular alternative bands had at the time. However, after some time has passed, and the music has gotten more and more sh**ty, I have gone back to some of the overlooked bands of that time period, and Blind Melon has been a gem of a find. There are so many texture's on this album, and it's a great album to light a fat hog-leg to! RIP Shannon Hoon

Blind Melon's Magnum Opus

by Green Spleen

I stumbled across Blind Melon's first album while adding songs to my ipod from my dad's music collection and immediately realized that I had found a musical treasure. Practically every time I got in the car I found myself playing their songs, so I very quickly decided to search for another of their albums. Soup is a less approachable piece than their self-titled work, and in my opinion it takes considerably more time to fully appreciate. Once the initial skepticism wears off, however, one finds that Soup is not only Blind Melon's greatest masterpiece, but also one of the best albums of the 90s. Here is my song by song take on each of Soup's tracks.
Galaxie: My personal favorite, Galaxie has a spectacular chorus and guitar riffs which made me shiver the first time I heard it. 10/10
2x4: An interesting song that perfectly illustrates Blind Melon's ability to transition seamlessly from uplifting to dark without losing momentum. 10/10
Vernie: A meandering, surreal song with some nice instrumental fluorishes. 8/10
Skinned: This banjo-playing diddy is bound to make anyone smile. 8.5/10
Toes Across the Floor: My second favorite on this album. The lyrics are intriguing and the vocals and instrumentals mesh perfectly. 10/10
Walk: I like the song overall, but Hoon's voice and the harmonica solo do most of the work. 8/10
Dump Truck: Not a favorite, but pleasantly heavy with some interesting transitions. 7.5/10
Car Seat: My least favorite song on this album. This song has some interesting Middle Eastern stylings and a creative intercom segment at the end, but I think of it as more experimental than actually musically appealing. 6/10
Wilt: This song moves a little slowly and seems to slog in places, but overall it is a reasonable tune. 7/10
The Duke: A little too ethereal for my tastes, but still a very good song with great choral-sounding vocals. 8/10
St. Andrew's Fall: Except for the chaotic moment in the middle, this is one of the best songs on the album. It has an irresistible tempo and great progression. 8/10
New Life: This song is ok, but it isn't anything particularly unique or jaw-dropping. 7.5/10
Mouthful of Cavities: An acoustic marvel that begins slowly and delicately and builds into an all-out electric guitar rock. 10/10
Lemonade: A quirky, likeable song with a dissonance which somehow ends up sounding harmonious in context. 10/10
Were I to ever be stranded on a desert island and able only to bring ten album, this would easily make the cut. Buy it now and understand why Blind Melon had such a devoted following in its heyday.

The Hidden Track is Not There

by Dokument

I accidentally found the hidden track on Soup many years ago. My CD player was really beat up and skipped a lot so it skipped to before track 1 and there it was.

I tunes says the hidden track is there but it is not.

Anyone know where to download it?

Thanks!

Biography

Formed: 1989

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Whereas most up-and-coming alternative bands of the early '90s borrowed from the leaders of the pack (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc.), Blind Melon were an exception to the rule — their roots lay in classic rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin). And while a promising career...
