iTunes Review

The title track’s majestic, doom-laden riff signals a new chapter in Slayer’s career. For the first time, fans could clearly discern Tom Araya’s lyrics, and there are even hints of melody. South of Heaven divided fans and even members of the band — Kerry King has called it his least favorite Slayer album. Regardless, “Silent Scream” and “Live Undead” remain among the group’s most brutal songs, driven by Dave Lombardo’s strapping drums. “Dissident Aggressor,” an obscure Judas Priest song, is the only cover to ever appear on a Slayer album. Few bands are better equipped to handle a Priest tune, and Slayer injects the old song with a newfound demonic menace. The closing piece, “Spill the Blood,” begins with a chiming arpeggio that is gentler than anything Slayer had attempted up to that point. The song later erupts into grinding blues metal, further proving that the band was discontent to rest on the style of Reign In Blood. Haven already beaten the speed-metal game, Slayer changed the rules with South of Heaven. The album’s great lesson is that courage and precision are just as powerful as rampaging speed.

Dave Lombardo reigns

While Slayer may have perfected their sound (and maybe metal altogether) with the epic Reign in Blood I think perhapse South of Heaven is the height of their creativity. It definately was Lombardos moment to shine. Not until Death's Individual Thought Patterns came out several years later that I thought Dave may have some competition. Remember this is all REAL drumming - no triggers or digital hanky panky. The fact that they could bring it down a notch and still devestate like on Reign is so impressive. When I saw them on the Clash of the Titans tour when they played Madatory Suicide the only thing they could follow it up with was Angel of Death.

Child of 80's Metal

Take your bible thumping to church, this is Slayer. The lyrics are not promoting Satanism, rather they are challenging the religious orthodoxy and they do it quite well. Religion is just like any other Philosophy, it is not fallible and the day it is no longer open to questioning is a day that scares me. On and On South of Heaven, my personal Fav of Slayer's illustrious catalog. On and On South of Heaven, my personal Fav of Slayer's ill

good album

This album is a lot slower than your usual slayer album but its got much more melody and tom arayas voice sounds a lot better. third best slayer album behind reign in blood and seasons in the abyss

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Slayer were one of the most distinctive, influential, and extreme thrash metal bands of the 1980s. Their graphic lyrics deal with everything from death and dismemberment to war and the horrors of hell. Their full-throttle velocity, wildly chaotic guitar solos, and powerful musical chops paint an effectively chilling sonic background for their obsessive chronicling of the dark side; this correspondence has helped Slayer's music hold up arguably better than the remaining Big Three '80s thrash outfits...
