Sails from different destinations
Since Don Tiki's last excursion into the Exotic Tuvalu Triangle of Lost Lounge Sounds the restless South Sea Islands natives have become corrupted further by parrot-toting foreign sailors' smoke, mirrors, and tight embrace of once forbidden taboos in pure Polynesian tonality. The trade winds blowing today through our Tiki bars' bamboo curtains, and making the torches flicker, bring Latin American rhythms that sultry sarong-clad songstresses overlay with croon and swoon, at once undone of Martin Denny's enchanting bird calls, sounding firmly vested in the nostalgic novelty of bossa-nova instead. Strung at the end of previous contraband that Don Tiki piled up on the docks, where sandalwood hunters gently rock their moorings, South of the Boudoir points to new horizons without yet setting sail. However, as the morning sun shreds the last smoke from the campfires on the beach and sends sparkles through abandoned rum bottles half buried in the sand, Captain Morgan may squint at last night's conquest swaying in his hammock and decide that more can be gained by keelhauling a Portuguese trader than by having another cofee with Kahlua in Waikiki. Let's hope Don Tiki makes it aboard for the next voyage into the known unknown...
South of the Boudoir is Don Tiki
Don Tiki – the keepers of the exotica flame – have released their fourth album, “South of the Boudoir,” their first in five years. It features 16 fresh tracks and over 70 minutes of lush, seductive melodies. Drawing inspiration from original exotica masters Marty, Arty and Les (Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter), Don Tiki boldly moves this evocative genre of music into the 21st century.
Don Tiki kicks off the CD with “Friendly Islands,” a sweet exotica classic sung originally by the sultry Ethel Azama back in the late ʻ50ʻs when Hawaiʻi became the 50th State. The sweet `n loverly Hai Jung will set your heart afire with her sexy vocals, while Sharene Lum gently plucks your emotions on harp. The track also features Hawaii’s most stellar musicians – Noel Okimoto on drums and vibes, Dean Taba on bass, Carlinhos de Oliveira on guiro, caxixi, and rainstick, and Don Tiki’s fearless leader, Perry Coma (Kit Ebersbach) on piano and celesta.
The next song, “Odd Man Out,” features forbidden sounds played on visually spectacular instruments smuggled in from Burma, Thailand and Viet Nam. The patwaing, the patellar, naal, and Chinese tomtom blend magically with Hawaiian and Brazilian percussion instruments. Lopaka Colon adds a jungle jazz overlay on bongo and dumbek.
The tantalizing “Bla Bla Cha Cha” features Don Tiki’s own cover girl, Sherry Shaoling, on bravura vocals, with Rockford Holmes doing his best to keep up with her on the saxophones. Put on your “Tinfoil Hats” as Ryoko Oka deftly creates a mesmerizing rhythmic pattern on the t`rung, an unearthly Vietnamese glockenspiel constructed exclusively of bamboo tubes and rubber bands.
Come fly away with Don Tiki as they continue on their global musical trek. On the album, you’ll encounter “Billions of Brazilians,” or find yourself “In Thailand” where the temptations prove to be too much for mere mortals.
Evoking the sounds of a paradise lost, this tiki-lounge experience transports you to another world – one filled with the music of a forgotten past but infused with an unmistakable modern lounge vibe. Find yourself…lose yourself…the exotic journey is up to you.
The more I listen, the more I LIKE IT!
Got my CD...It's freakin' awesome! Yes, Don Tiki is growing and changing just as neo-exotica is. (the only constant is change tiki tribe, remember?) This CD has bunches of classic exotica, and some really interesting tracks like "Rapture of the Deep"...wow! I have not heard a woman moan like that since Donna Summer did "Love to Love you"! Oh wait, I think I was suposed to say.. I had not heard a woman moan like that (on a musical track) since Donna Summer. Doh! Bla Bla Cha Cha - extremely clever, and show's Don Tiki's complete mastery of lounge and exotica. They make it look easy, and we know it's anything but. I found my self humming "In Thailand". I think this track shows Don Tiki's self assured position as reining champions of neo-exotica, and, much like traditional exotica, they are not here to make politically correct ethnically sensitive songs. I mean this song jabs a thumb over it's shoulder with a smirk at some certain western/eastern relationships - It's wit and wisdom is that of a jedi master of it's craft - humorous in that Frank Zappa smart kinda way. Yea, I have been to Thailand, and I was in that certain area of Bangkok ya' know...so "I've been thither, I've been thence." But the ultimate track for this huge delmar deWild fan is "Pagan Love" - that's a full on big 'ol exotica lounge hit in the same vein as "The Natives are Restless Tonight". I hope I to see them preform that groovie toon on stage. With front man Delmar backed up by the Don Tiki dancers, it'll be a show stopper! Thank you Fluid Floyd and all of Don Tiki! Buy it. Play it. Dig it.
