Album Review

Dispensing with the alternative-rock leanings of some of his earlier albums like Liquor in the Front, Reverend Horton Heat returns with his sixth album Spend a Night in the Box, which features a clean, traditional rockabilly sound, courtesy of producer (and former Butthole Surfer) Paul Leary. The stripped-down sound of songs like "Big D Boogie Woogie" and "The Girl in Blue" is all the better to show off the amazing chops of the Reverend and the other two-thirds of the trio, bassist Jimbo Wallace and drummer Scott Churilla. The group's old punkabilly venom resurfaces on "Sue Jack Daniels," and while most of the songs recount the Reverend's usual litany of babes and booze, "It Hurts Your Daddy Bad" and "The Bedroom Again" show surprising lyrical depth. Though there's some filler, for the most part Spend a Night in the Box is another album of entertaining, revved-up rockabilly from a group that has made it look effortless for years.

Customer Reviews

when The Rev. speaks you should listen

This is a great album by a great band. The Rev. is most known for their Psychobilly craziness, and that stuff is good, but I'm more of a roots guy so I love the stuff that is more classic throwback like spend a night in the box. This is pure modern rockabilly, but not as hard as their early stuff a little more in the same sound as Setzer and the Stray cats. The Rev. has one of the holliest tones on this album and his guitar playing kills. For the most part this is straight up modern Rockabilly with the excepption of "Sue Jack Daniels" which is more like their early stuff. The lyrics are a little less tongue and cheek as some of the Rev.'s other work. He actually dives into some pretty heavy material on "It Hurts your Daddy Bad", and "The Bedroom again". Praise the lord for the Rev!

The Reverend Horton Heat is perhaps the most popular psychobilly artist of all time, his recognition only rivaled only by the esteem generated by the genre's founders, the Cramps. The Reverend (as both the three-man band and its guitar-playing frontman were known) built a strong cult following during the '90s through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a twisted sense of humor. The latter was nothing new in the world of psychobilly, of course, and Heat's music certainly kept the trashy aesthetic...
