Album Review

After debuting in 1999 with the all-star Quannum Spectrum record, the Quannum label wasn't releasing enough albums to qualify as anything other than a boutique label; Lifesavas' wide-release LP was actually the first from a non-Quannum-connected artist. Spearheaded by Blackalicious' Chief Xcel, Spirit in Stone reveals a heavily spiritual hip-hop crew with plenty of talent. Producer Jumbo the Garbageman creates some warm, hard-hitting tracks heavy on the soul samples, and main rapper Vursatyl expands his De La Soul influence to don several guises, from a politically and spiritually conscious intelligent rapper to a smooth-flow master to a Rasta spitter. Gift of Gab, always a great addition to an optimistic message track, drops a batch of twisting rhymes for "Livin' Time/Life: Movement 1," and the full Quannum crew unites for the scratch symphony "Emerge." Lifesavas need more work to hit the same high peak as Blackalicious, but they already possess one of the rarest traits to find in hip-hop — the ability to write on intriguing subjects, no matter the mic skills or sample digging. For evidence, listen to the hilarious "Hellohihey," on which Vursatyl runs through a collection of rap-group character lessons, from a metaphysical, cartoonish Voltron of a hip-hop crew to an arrogant, greater-than-thou rapper.

Intelligent Hip-Hop!!!

Now this is Hip-Hop! Whatever happned to the classic lyrical eMCee? Do the so called rappers of today even understand what it is to eMCee, to be a master of ceremonies? Do they even understand the meaning? Or do they just discuss the repetitive and dull topics of their lavishing array of tangible materials? Is it because talent no longer exists or does not matter in order to make a hit record? Today, people are left in the dark and are blinded by their perception of the Hip-Hop culture. Hip-Hop has evolved into two separate and highly distinctive sub-genres: the popular and commonly known "Hip-Pop" where nonsense is the primary concept of the track, and "Underground Hip-Hop" or simply "Underground" where raw talent and genuine passion for the culture and the music exist and is very much preserved. Each of the tracks in this record tell a story. They have meanings, from the words that were used to each element of the beat. Listen to the track, don't just hear it! Then you might appreciate it.

Lifting my spirts from the stone

This album has all the elements of a a true hip hop recording. Listen closely and you can hear the jazz, soul, hip-ho,p reggae and also some J Dilla. I won't say which tracks...I look forward for their next release coming soon from Quannum Projects. Mo Betta makes it Mo Betta

Holy Spirit in Hip-Hop

This album gets overlooked as one of the top God-fearing releases since 2000. I heard "What if it's True" at a college baseball game (a player used it as an intro song) and was hooked on the hook itself. To find out they were talking about Christ blew my mind and now I continue to pick up nuggets of Gospel everytime I listen. I hope they continue to spit scripture and talk about what matters; eternity!

Biography

Formed: Portland, OR

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

Lifesavas, the Portland, OR-based duo of MC Vursatyl and producer/MC Jumbo the Garbageman, became one of the few non-affiliated artists to release a record through Quannum, the successor to underground rap phenom Solesides. The duo met while playing basketball and soon got hipped to each other's rapping talents; after a short-lived project, they formed Lifesavas and recorded a single, "Grand Larceny." After it was heard by Quannum-connected Chief Xcel, the pair began getting spins and did a show...
