Album Review

Talk about ambitious. This two-LP set finds guitarist Al di Meola performing with his quintet of the time (featuring keyboardist Philippe Saisse), with studio musicians, solo, in a reunion with pianist Chick Corea, singing a love song, and welcoming veteran Les Paul for a version of "Spanish Eyes." Most of the music works quite well and it shows that di Meola (best-known for his speedy rock-oriented solos) is a surprisingly well-rounded and versatile musician.

Customer Reviews

Utterly Amazing.

Al Di Meola presents concepts on the electric guitar on this breathtaking album which were very innovative for the time on this album, neoclassical shredding techniques being challenged by few in 1980 (Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen), and at the same time retains beautifully-arranged compositions on the classical and acoustic guitars. It's unbelievable some of the things Al does, at times combining many traditional spanish and afro-cuban rythems with intricate and maniacal guitar work. The opening track, "Alein Chase On Arabian Desert", is quite possibly the most interestingly diverse track on the album, but that's not saying the other's aren't. Splendido Sundance contains extremely technical acoustic guitar work that is, well, easily classifiable as "insane," and tracks like "Al Di's Dream Theme" and "Spanish Eyes" are also breathtaking. The album itself is extremely well-constructed as well. There are consistent elements throughout the whole thing, subtle, beautful changes in tempo and rythem patterns, and each song flows perfectly into the next. In short, this album is a must-own.
