Album Review
Best known for his 1996 hit "Barely Breathing," singer and songwriter Duncan Sheik has also enjoyed a successful second career composing music for film and theater, and in 2006, Sheik collaborated with playwright and lyricist Steve Sater on the Tony-award winning musical Spring Awakening, with Sheik writing and arranging the music. Concerning a handful of teenagers dealing with their powerful sexual appetites in 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening was a critical and popular success, and this album features Sheik and Sater's songs performed by the show's original Broadway cast. Selections include "All That's Known," "Touch Me," "The World of Your Body," "The Guilty Ones," and many more.

Beautiful, Gorgeous, Best Musical EVER!
This is the most amazing musical ever! I love the album and all of the music. The cast is simply perfect and I love this show dearly. It's truly, truly amazing. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing it is. But, iTunes, not ALL of the songs are explicit. Mama Who Bore Me Mama Who Bore Me (Reprise) All That's Known My Junk Touch Me The Word of Your Body The Dark I Know Well The Mirror-Blue Night I Believe Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind The Guilty Ones Left Behind The Word of Your Body (Reprise) Whispering Those You've Known The Song of Purple Summer All of the songs above are NOT explicit, so you need to take that warning off for those songs. So, in a review, this is an incredible musical. A great experience. Take your teenagers - I recommend it for 14 & Up. It's fantastic and is the definition of perfection. Bravo, Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater, Michael Mayer. PS - Congrats on 8 well deserved Tony Awards! You deserved all 11 but 8 is still great! I love the amazing, flawless cast - Lea, Jonathan, Johnny, Lauren, Skylar, Remy, Phoebe, Brian, Jonathan, Gideon, Lilli, and the great ensemble. You are all incredible and I idolize every single one of you.
Musical Awakening
This show will most definately change the conventions of modern musical theatre. It's chord structure and musicality is incredibly unique to the genre and the music is true to heart. Shiek stylistically liberates himself from Larson's over simplified compositions and allows for harsh, sometimes cacophonous songs that touch the soul and overall, inspire the masses. A definate must buy, and if you ever get to the city, a must must must see!
Good Pop Music, But That's All
The CD is very well produced and the singers are fine. I have liked Duncan Sheik as a songwriter ever since "Barely Breathing." But everyone who is saying this is the best musical ever written, or nothing will ever be the same again, etc., needs to take a deep breath and calm down. All this is is pop music in a new venue. What's striking is not that this genre-mixing works but that so many previous attempts have failed so spectacularly (e.g., most of those odious "jukebox musicals."). To that end, "Spring Awakening" is to be commended for fitting its music into the theatre medium and, as many have noted, updating the pop music theatre sound from the aging "Rent." But there is plenty of just as original work (if not more so) being written on the classical side by the likes of Adam Guettel and Ricky Ian Gordon, and shows like "The Last Five Years" and Lippa's "Wild Party" tread the musical middle ground with subtlety and wit. Music theatre writing is very much alive and well... the only thing that's changing is that people who like pop music are starting to notice.
