Album Review

Spring and Summer are the final two installments of Foreman's solo venture after a highly successful first decade leading modern rock wondergroup Switchfoot. Like Fall and Winter before them, they were released several months apart but later packaged together as a 12-track set. The heavy lyrical subjects on the first two seasonal EPs was swapped for more lightweight matter on Spring, which contrasted almost too sharply to make the entire set cohesive. But then again, that may have been the point. Time and time again, the stripped-down sets on Spring and Summer are polar opposites of Foreman's Switchfoot material, as he again varies the instrumentation, the song forms and meters (rhythms), the overall feel, and production (Foreman recorded the EPs in his living room). What emerges is a clear portrait of a man whose quest for ultimate meaning and direction in life is directed to God in imperfect ways. Summer is the most ebullient of the four EPs, and rightfully so as the title would suggest.

Thanks for the Seasons...

by Ryan Chia from Singapore - a VERY BIG JON FOREMAN's FAN

It is not a very big surprise to see why Christianity Today voted this as the second best album of the year for 2008. All the songs in the 4 CDs are beautifully written and composed. Jon managed to showcase another side of him - the much quiet and introspective side of things. How many times do you actually get to hear a good quiet song these days? Of course, I am looking forward to Switchfoot's new album - a much different, even louder side of Jon. But for now, i am enjoying a beautiful time just reflecting on the lyrics of the 4 seasons and praying through them - the much favourite Psalm 23 and 51, alongside with the fresh take on the Lord's Prayer. Thanks for the journey, jon.

Though not exactly christian these EP's are deep and ask many good questions. I would encourage people to listen to these songs, if only for the life questions. These songs have caused me to really think about certain aspects of life. To get some background on Jon Foreman visit the Nuclearity page and they have a podcast entitled "summer, spring, winter, fall" and this will give more details about the making of these EP's plus a personal interview.
