effervescent melodies and dream-like sonics

Ghostly International's 22-year-old wunderkind Randolph Chabot's ecstatic adolescence manifests itself in every crevice of his self-proclaimed "space symphonies." Under the pseudonym Deastro-- Chabot's superhero-inspired alter ego-- he crafts, at face value, glistening shoegaze. But Deastro's starry-eyed innocence and abounding indie-pop tropes (an obsession with youth and a playful indifference to the surrounding world) are what set him apart from the traditional shoegaze lexicon. "Spritle", the title track off Deastro's new 7" single ahead of his upcoming Moondagger LP, is just such a song. From the opening yelp of a distorted synth, "Spritle" exudes his cheer and unbridled youth. The syrupy hopeful lyrics ("Oh my lord, this is the place I've been dreaming of") and effervescent melodies just go to epitomize the dream-like sonics of the song's swirling keyboards and splashy percussion. As the track crescendo's a la Explosions in the Sky, it feels jarringly obtuse, a falsified climax to an otherwise static youth. But when Chabot's vocals interrupt wholesale, his willful indifference ("I've got ape-like eyes, and preacher thighs, a mouth, and a stereo") returns the track to its arrested development and seemingly destined, trailing end. — Chris Gaerig, Pitchfork.com
