iTunes Review

Responsible for birthing influential bands like Television and the Heartbreakers (with Johnny Thunders), and pretty much single-handedly creating punk couture with safety pins and spiked hair, the Richard Hell story is a colorful one. This compact overview features the best-known tracks from the band that most defined Hell musically, the Voidoids, and is fleshed out with both well-chosen historical gems and later works. A Neon Boys single from 1973 (“That’s All I Know”) and the Heartbreakers’ 1975 classic “Chinese Rocks” shine a light on the Voidoids’ worthy antecedents. Five tracks showcase Hell’s 1992 collaborations with Thurston Moore in the band Dim Stars (tracks 14 -17 and 20), and a duo of more recent recordings are strong reminders of Hell’s artistic originality: 2001’s “Oh” celebrates a brief Voidoids reunion shortly before the death of ace guitarist Robert Quine, and 2004’s bizarre, Middle East-hillbilly mashup, “She’ll Be Coming (For Dennis Cooper,” startles in the same way Hell’s vision did back in the ‘70s.

An Architect of Punk

Richard Hell is the real deal -- he alone personifies the meaning of "Punk" -- because he lived and breathed the Punk ideal. Unlike Malcolm McLaren, and to some extent, the Sex Pistols themselves, who were enamored with the idea of mass consumption, Hell, along with Tom Verlaine, Robert Quine (now deceased), and Richard Lloyd created some of the most engaging and crusty punk rock ever. Long retired from making music, Hell deserves the respect of an "elder statesman" -- his splintered yelp is enough to place him in the top of Punk Rock's heap.

Just get the rare songs

I just don't believe in best-of compilations, but there are some good rare songs on here. The first two tracks and track 21 are early Neon Boys/Television tracks made when Hell played bass for them. They eventually split because Hell wanted creative control over Verlaine. It's a shame because these tracks are downright awesome. Also of note is the song "Oh." This was a one song Voidoids reunion done to be released exclusively online. It was put on this CD, and subsequently back online again. weird. The songs from Destiny Street are on here in different mixes. I only bought "Kid With Replaceable Head" as it was the most noticeably different from what's on the original album. As I don't believe in best-of's, I'm going to buy the CD's by Hell in their original configurations (all three of them). P.S. At richardhell.com you can buy them autographed.

awsome!
