Original, Garage-Punk Goodness! Too Much For Any Man!
The previous reviewers really honed in well with what makes The Hydes such a pleasure to listen to. I'm amazed that this is their freshman effort. Listening to "Sputnik Phantom" I kept saying to myself "Yes! Yes! They got it right!". The perfectly blended their musical influences and stylings into something new. I don't know these guys to know what their influences are but you can hear it so clearly if you just listen to the trax on "Sputnik Phantom". You'll hear the rawness of The Oblivions, the .13 gauge strings of Dick Dale, and the excitement that was The Cramps. One of the previous reviewers mentioned Man or AstroMan. Hell to the EFF YEAH!
The Hydes are on their way. I listen to this album daily. It is that fresh and that good.
If you're sick of looking at the current horde of bland, anonymous, faceless, bearded bands in western shirts and and all of the wannabe rockabilly/punk/metal/monster/white trash/nothing to offer groupings out there, reward yourself by getting "Sputnik Phantom" by The Hydes. And get ready for a great time.
They're on Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Find them, join them, and most importantly support them.
The Hydes are something special.
Blistering, Ear-splitting, Wet & Raw, Space & Time Warping, Rock & Roll
Take the trashy two guitar rockabilly stylings of The Cramps, the monster movie lyrical themes of the Misfits, b-movie shock metal leads of J. from White Zombie, roll together with some Man or AstroMan? space surf and Phantom Surfers primitive garage surf, add a little early nineties b*lls out throat scaring Cobain / Kat Bjelland vocals, and top with the primitive garage sounds of The Oblivans and The Mummies - and you've got The Hydes. Sputnik Phantom takes all of those influences and ties them up in a big, creepy-looking, really loud package. From the first track, "Holy Crap it's the Hydes!?!?" you know you're in for something different- and somewhat unsettling. The next track is a driving aggro-infested punk rock pounder entitled "I Wanna Get F*cked Up." And just when you think you're in for a trash punk rock ride a la Zeke, you're slapped with a mind-bending cover of the 60's surf hit Pipeline by The Chantays. But this ain't your granddad's surf, this sounds more like an underwater knife fight on the deck of a sinking oil rig. "Return of the Mantis," the touching ballad of a giant man eating mantis from outer space, borders on straight-up metal, but never loses its garage surf grounding. "CCCP" takes a slight turn into an alternate-universe version of 1980's Soviet cold war-era pop. "Cannibal Girls" has mega-distorted 60's pop flair, "Surfari" is another blistering surf cover from the 1960's re-envisioned, and finally we're left with the punk rock head knocker "Medusa". One word for the freshman effort of New York based rock/punk/metal/noise band The Hydes - Awesome.
The Hydes Gnash Their Teeth and Stare You Down
Sputnik Phantom sounds as if The Hydes have absorbed the musical essences of Joey Ramone and Dick Dale by murdering them and drinking their blood. The record takes you on a rollercoaster ride of driving freight-train punk rhythms and 1960's surf-twang. The lyrics are delivered by lead singer Brian Brown, whose bloodcurdling rock n' roll screams in "I Wanna Get F*#ked Up" rival the best I've heard, which is high praise from somebody who has listened to as much punk rock as I have. The band draws the best elements of the 1970's NYC punk scene and twists them to their own sick vision of B-movie mayhem, and the result is deliciously sinister and unsettling. But the sounds you'll hear aren't just repeated versions of previous accomplishments; the group breaks new ground and blazes new trails here with this Frankenstein's monster they've constructed. This record is guaranteed to remain in heavy rotation on my iPhone. Let's hope the aliens can't pick up The Hydes' signal on satellite radio, or they may be moved to violence. Good background ambience for family get-togethers. Five Stars.
