Album Review

St. Valentine's Garage is the first full-length release from Lawrence, KS-based power pop veterans Kill Creek. The band's music has grown quieter and more concise since this record came out in 1994, but in the process it has lost some of the grit that makes St. Valentine's Garage so much fun to listen to. Songs like "Busted" and "Killing" rocket forward with abandon, propelled by Charles Sharpe's arena rock-style drumming, Scott Born's strained, little-boy-sounding vocals, and heaps of dissonant guitars. Others, like "Stretch" and "Die Young," ache with regret but are buoyed by fresh guitar and vocal hooks. St. Valentine's Garage is brawny, catchy, and desperate — all that a great power pop record should be.

Best Kept Secret...

This album is seriously the best kept secret of the 90s. I picked this up on a total whim forever ago, and it's easily one of the best indie records ever made. How this band failed to explode in popularity during the Promise Ring / Get Up Kids / Jimmy Eat World takeover of the mid 1990s is beyond me. "St. Valentine's Garage" is one of the most heartfelt and honestly writtin records I own. The record is a powerhouse of fury, melody and raw emotion put to tape. You can hear the blood and sweat that went into making this record. Unfortunately, the recordings following this one fall short in creativity and intensity (IMO). 16 years later, it still stands as one of my top 10 favorite records.

A Desert Island Album

Great record. Great work. Ron Hayes and Pat Grassy are the best guitar/bass duo for 10 years in any direction.

Formed: 1986 in Lawrence, KS

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed in 1986 while founders Scott Born (vocals/guitar) and Ron Hayes (guitar) were both still in high school, Kill Creek took to formation under the post-punk influences of Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Mission of Burma. Accompanied by their own brand of straight power pop in comparison to the likes of Hüsker Dü and the Doughboys, Kill Creek developed a sound of their own, while processing a number of what they call "embarrassing basement demos" between 1986 through 1993. In between contributing...
