iTunes Review

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were such a tight unit in the mid-2000s that they had enough material to spill over into a 28-song “double” album. Producer Rick Rubin has always brought out the best in them and he leaves plenty of room in the sound here for listeners to enjoy the magnificent interplay between the rhythm section and guitarist John Frusciante, whose explorations have that rare gift of true lyricism. The songs run the gamut of Chili Pepper styles. “Dani California” is a prototypical tune, with singer Anthony Kiedis out in front singing with combative energy. “She’s Only 18” grinds between an ominous heaviness and the pure pop that’s always influenced the group and has become, in recent years, more pronounced. “Slow Cheetah” and “Hard To Concentrate” are worthy ballads in the “Under the Bridge” mode. “If” is even more quiet and introspective. “We Believe” paints a soul-based psychedelic sky. “21st Century” turns up the funk that has been surprisingly usurped along the way by the group’s love for classic rock, pop and soul.

Customer Reviews

It's a glorious creeper.

The above "review" is ridiculous. To suggest that Keidis is a "liability" to the band, and that another singer might "help shape the songs better" is critic's ignorance of what it means to "be in a band" at it's finest. That said, this is a glorious album. By the 3rd listen, you'll be jonesing for it every minute of the day. No one ever talks about how much the peppers have grown as band since the days of "Freaky Styley". They are one the last great organic musical brotherhoods, and deserve credit for that.

great work of art

I never write reviews. The itunes guy who reviewed this album should be fired. I have followed the RHCP forever. This is their best work of art to date. Complete. Mature. Incredible. Granted, there are some song one may want to pass over, yet there are 28 songs on this album. Which other group or artist is putting out an album with 28 songs? If you like their direction in the 21st century, style of music, etc. , you will not be disappointed with this album.

This is worth more than a 5 star!

This is the RHCP's greatest works, they put enough of their RHCP style and talent into every one of their songs...all of these songs deserve to be hits; Dani California is simply their best! I hope that they form another all-hit album like this. RHCP=Anthony+John+Flea+Chad. RHCP=true inspiration. RHCP for life.

Biography

Formed: 1983 in Hollywood, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak,...
