Album Review

The ambitious Standing Up Straight builds on the eclecticism of the EPs collected on The Legendary Wolfgang Press, further broadening the trio's horizons by layering their dark, unforgiving sound with elements of industrial and classical music. While "Hammer the Halo" and "Rotten Fodder" in particular stand out as two of the group's most aggressive efforts, the intensity level remains high throughout — a challenging, even punishing album, but a rewarding one as well.

creative masterpiece

Twenty Three years later this album still amazes me. Full of clanging metal sounds, swirling violins and cellos, brilliant percussion-and that's just the first song "Dig a Hole". This is a dense album best listened to as a whole piece. The Wolfgang Press are at the top of their game here, combining discord, rhythm and economical melody on each unique track. Check out the piano parts on the track "Forty Days, Thirty Nights", seemingly played with one finger, and the yearning of the backing vocals on the plaintive "I am the Crime" by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. Give this album some time with repeated listens and when it "clicks" and you make sense of the songs you'll be in for a long term treat!
