More of a Curiosity than a Necessity

When this recording was released in 1988, it was essential because it contained two previously unreleased tracks, most notably Darth Vader's Death from "Return of the Jedi." Since then, of course, the complete scores from the original trilogy have been released, which greatly reduces its significance. Nothing here comes close to matching the original soundtracks. The Utah Symphony Orchestra's brass section isn't powerful enough to convey the driving intensity of the action sequences, and the occasional missed notes are quite jarring. The choices conductor Varujan Kojian makes may be frustrating to those familiar with the original recordings; he often moves too slowly through the action sequences and runs too quickly through the more melodic material. Also, several of these selections deviate from their film orchestrations in a feeble attempt to make them self-contained concert suites. One of the most thrilling musical moments in the entire saga, The Asteroid Field from "The Empire Strikes Back," is painfully diminished by this treatment. Ultimately, this recording is best for curiosity seekers who want to hear a different interpretation of these classic scores; people looking for a definitive presentation of this material should stick with the original soundtracks.

Buy this CD you will!

No Star Wars Geeks musical collection is complete without John Williams masterwork. It will have you marching around your house like a storm trooper, and reciting your favorite lines from the Trilogy. "You don't know the power of this CD". From the opening title to yoda's theme this CD will bring the geek out of anyone. Even the March of the Ewoks is good, though the ewoks themselves are lame. Only a SCRUFFY LOOKING NERF HERDER wouldn't enjoy this recording. Get your lightsabers ready for a musical adventure down memory lane and "May the Force be with You!"
