Album Review

Neil Zaza comes from the school of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. The thing is, he has learned his lesson well enough to bring into question who should be the teacher and who the student. Indeed, Zaza's sound encompasses that classic rock textured guitar instrumental type of music. It does, however, seem to have an energy and enthusiasm that are sometimes missing from the aforementioned guitarists' work. It has all the technical skill, but with a wonderful taste and fire that are sometimes lacking in the music of Vai and Satriani. Zaza is not tied to just those two guitarists for inspiration, though; from time to time you might hear sounds that call to mind musicians such as Edgar Winter, Steve Howe, and Carlos Santana. Add to that mix the killer Journey rhythm section of Steve Smith and Ross Valory and you can really see what makes this disc such a special work. Among the highlights of the CD is a wonderful take on Prince's "Purple Rain," with the guitar taking the vocal line on this instrumental arrangement. If your taste runs to guitar heroes, do yourself a favor and check this one out. You will be pleased.

Zaza screams with heart and soul

Zaza's music is a wonderful reminder of how awesome a guitar can sound in the hands of a master. Hints of Satriani, Santana, and Vai come through loud and clear but with more soul and heart. His rendition of Purple Rain made me want to light a lighter and wave it in the air even more than Prince's original - literally had me in tears. All guitar lovers should listen to this work and check out his other stuff.

You need to see him live to really appreciate his talent!

Zaza is the greatest guitarist in the world that no one has ever heard of, it seems! He was mostly a clinical guitarist for Cort Guitars when I first saw him, but the music he has introduced over the past ten years or so has continued to get better and better and he is finally getting the notoriety that he well deserves. I've seen him live four or five times in small club settings and the best was about ten years ago when he was doing a free clinic at Mom's Music in Jeffersonville, Indiana and my brother-in-law and I were the only people in the studio with the band. He was doing a short tour with Johnny Rock on drums and "The Budda" on bass. Both of those guys are unbelievable at what they do too. It was one of those life experiences you never forget!

Amazing!

Simply amazing, being a big Satriani and Vai fan I decided to check Zaza out and was not disappointed. Every track on this album is one you will play over and over, the control of tone and texture is a joy to experience.
