iTunes Review

Staring Down the Brilliant Dream is a summation of what the Indigo Girls have accomplished over two eventful decades. This double-disc live collection features 31 tunes recorded at various venues during the duo’s 2006-2009 tours. Since their emergence in the late ‘80s, these folk-rock icons have stood up for human dignity and creative freedom without backing down an inch, surviving label changes while forging an unshakable bond with their fans. As musicians, Ray and Saliers have grown into masterful, road-seasoned troubadours, playing their impeccable vocal harmonies against stinging guitar licks and rollicking melodies. Staring Down the Brilliant Dream gives a sense of how much they’ve accomplished, as well as their ability to transfix and galvanize a crowd. From early favorites like “Closer to Fine” (heard here in sing-along form) and “Kid Fears,” through outstanding recent songs like “Digging for Your Dream” and “What Are You Like,” the full scope of the Indigo Girls’ work to date is documented here. Long-time devotees and newcomers alike will find this album an inspiring experience.

Buy this CD!!!

Amazing music, as always. The Indigo Girls are so in tune with their fans, and they hit the mark with every song they chose for this CD. I'd buy it a thousand times over.

These songs grow each time they are played

Amy and Emily interact with their band and guest musicians to create more depth and complexity to each of these songs. Nearly all of these live songs eclipse their studio versions. The addition of Julie Wolf's keyboard and vocals on many of these tunes creates a softness that allows for a lot greater musical experimentation than you might see if only Amy and Emily were on stage.

Even the dedicated Indigo Girls fan will likely be surprised by the beauty of "Salty South," the foot-stomping meditation of "Devotion," the musicianship on "Closer to Fine," and the new twists in "Shame on You." It's awesome to see that this duo has been making music together now for 25 years and are still able to keep it fresh while crafting new material that, in special moments, far eclipses much of their earlier work.

Nothing but love

I have been a fan of these ladies for a long time and they always deliver, whether in the studio or live and in person. Enjoy for what it is, lovely music.

Biography

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

While they came into prominence as part of the late-'80s folky singer/songwriter revival, the Indigo Girls had staying power where other artists from the same era quickly faded. Their two-women-with-guitars formula may not have seemed very revolutionary on paper, but the combination of two distinct personalities and songwriting styles provided tension and an interesting balance. Emily Saliers, hailing from the more traditional Joni Mitchell school, boasted a gentler sound, was more complex musically,...
