iTunes Review

Growing older without giving up your dreams is the dominant topic on The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, Nada Surf’s first album in four years. Singer/guitarist Matthew Caws confronts life’s inevitable changes with a blend of wistfulness and quiet resolve. “Clear Eye Clouded Mind,” “Looking Through,” and “Waiting for Something” ride brisk chords and propulsive rhythms as they parse the elusive nature of happiness. The album’s mood is mostly buoyant yet bittersweet, with “Let the Fight Do the Fighting” gaining color from a trumpet solo and “Jules and Jim” shimmering with acoustic guitar and xylophone. An abrasive middle section helps release the emotional volatility of “When I Was Young,” an elegy to a fondly remembered past. The closing track, “The Future,” offers a burst of qualified hope with an uplifting melody and wry lyrics. With the help of engineer/coproducer Chris Shaw, Nada Surf achieves a sound on Stars that’s crisp, light, and forceful: a perfect match for the lyrics' yearning quality.

Nada Surf is indifferent to astronomy

This is a strong effort from the boys. Let's face it, either you like Nada Surf or you don't. I happen to love their upbeat Alt Pop sound and it is always music to my ears. The first time I heard The Moon is Calling I got really pumped. This album is not perfect, but pretty close if you are a Nada Surf fan. Yeah they could experiment more, but in a day and age when bands try to mix it up and fans rebel, or are disappointed that they are not what they once were this band sticks to what they know best. I would rather have Nada Surf sound like they always have instead of sounding like something that they are not. Nada Surf knows who they are and enjoy making the kind of music they are best making!

Once in danger of being relegated to "one-hit wonder" status, Nada Surf soldiered onward after the success of 1996's "Popular," following up a brief residence on the Billboard charts with a slew of solid power pop albums. Founders Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar) and Daniel Lorca (bass) were longtime school friends, having studied together at the Lycée Français de New York in Upper Manhattan. After Lorca spent some time abroad in the late '80s, the two reunited after graduation to form Because Because...
