iTunes Review

Culled from outtakes from the past decade's worth of work in order to have a studio album to promote during their 1981 American Tour, Tattoo You is a surprisingly cohesive collection, considered by many hardcore fans to be the Rolling Stones' last solid studio album. Time will decide that matter. However, for what it is, Tattoo You does feature all the trademarks that made the band an enduring entity long past its first rounds of international success. "Start Me Up" has become one of the group's biggest hits, while "Little T&A" is the perfect showcase for Keith Richards' parched snarl. "Hang Fire" and "Neighbours" define the harder edge of the band's sound. "Black Limousine" nods to their blues roots, while the falsetto-led "Tops," "Heaven," and "No Use In Crying" gently pave the way for "Waiting On A Friend," with a guest sax solo from jazz legend Sonny Rollins, that wraps things up on a strong note of confidence.

Pretty Good

While this is most definetly not the best Stones album out there, it is pretty high up on the list, although judging by some reviews I had been seeing prior to purchasing this album, I was expecting absolute greatness. That is not to diminish from the album, it is just that it was built up pretty high. My favortie track is "Slave" a 6 minute 30 second jam session led by Bill Wyman's bluesy bassline and Charlie Watts' steady, pounding drumbeat. I was not really fan of the second half of the album (tracks 7-11) with the exception of "Waiting on a Friend," one of my favorite Stones' tunes of all time. Tracks 7-10 prominently feature Mick's falsetto prominently lack Keith's guitar, a combination that did not sit well with me. I am sure any Stones' fan already has the album; but if you're not, preview some of the tracks and see what you think before buying it.

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had...
