Album Review
When a recording artist titles an album Starting Over, as several have, it comes as a clear statement of intent. In the case of neo-blue-eyed soulman Ernie Halter, that statement seems to have been intended as a personal one. "The new record is called Starting Over for a reason," Halter is quoted as saying in a press release. "I wanted the title to be direct, simple, and set the tone for the album. In this past year, I experienced the unraveling of my marriage and the birth of my first son." To be sure, those are momentous events in anyone's life. But the songs on Starting Over and the manner in which they are performed do not justify the title. Although the disc begins with "Different Lives," a breakup song, most of the songs are about happy love, not sad, and none are about childbirth. (Arguably, the final song, "Lighthouse," could be a father's declaration of support for a child, but it really sounds like another romantic love song.) And Halter certainly is not starting over in terms of musical approach. Most of the descriptions that were applied to his last album, Congress Hotel, apply here, too. Stevie Wonder still rules as a primary influence (in particular, "Blue Dress" has some of the vocal feel of "Boogie on Reggae Woman"), and among contemporary performers, John Mayer still bears holding up for comparison. Halter does introduce a suggestion of South African mbaqanga music in "Crazy Love," but for the most part this is the music of a white boy in love with '70s mainstream R&B. He sounds more distinctive when he strips away the instrumentation, as he does, for example, on "Lighthouse," employing only a piano. But instead of calling the album Starting Over, he should have called it "Steady as She Goes."

Great Music!
My wife and I so very much enjoy Ernie's music. We love hearing him live, performing around Orange County (although not lately, since he's been all over!) or hearing him in the car. We played the song Whisper so much when my wife was pregnant (up until now), when our daughter came, nothing but that song soothed the baby! This New CD of Ernie's is an extension of his first - in that the songs are just as great; at the same time it demonstrates how he has grown as a musician and a performer. Songs like Count the Days, My heart is with You, Played and Light House show his range. Cyclone shows the fun loving, free spirited performer we got to know an dappreciate. What a great pleasure it is to listen to Ernie's music!!!!
He did it again
Yet another amazing album by Ernie. He is such a talented singer/songwriter, I can't wait for the whole world to discover him. And it's great to finally have a cd version of the new music I've had the pleasure of hearing him play over the past few months. If you are wondering if he's really that amazing, don't hesitate. This is a great deal on an amazing album. Buy it.
Always a listening pleasure
Ernie Halter never fails to please both his avid fans and the casual listener alike. In this new album, Ernie's sound has grown and evolved from his previous effort, "Congress Hotel". However, he still maintains the musical qualities that make him such a unique artist. This album adds a personal touch as Ernie shares his experiences with his listener. Among the varying tracks on this album, the song "Try" is a beautiful, heart wrenching song and "Cyclone" is a unique twist on the song originally created by Baby Bash. Blending Ernie's smooth voice and varying musical styles, this album is certainly an eclectic collection well worth a listen. The album draws a range of emotions out of the listener, something so rare in today's artists.
