Album Review

Her most rock & roll-oriented album, and one of the finest solo rock albums of the mid-'60s. Besides the two hit title tracks, Dusty covers various American soul and pop tunes that usually rank at least equal to the originals, in some cases totally outclassing them. In particular, she improves upon "24 Hours From Tulsa," "Anyone Who Had a Heart," "You Don't Own Me," and "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes." The production is the most credible approximation of the Phil Spector wall of sound ever managed in the U.K., with full brass and strings, soulful female backup choruses, and pounding piano and drums. Also includes a first-rate Springfield original, "Somethin' Special."

It's Like An Early Hits Collection

For an album produced in the mid-60's, when then norm was to produce one or two hits and surround them by a group of mediocre covers, this one is truly a standout. Several classic hits certainly do abound here; from "I Only Want to Be With You", to "Stay Awhile", "Anyone Who Had a Heart", "Wishin' and Hopin' ", and "You Don't Own Me." But it doesn't stop there, as there are several other standouts, including "Twenty-Four Hours From Tulsa", "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" and "If It Hadn't Been for You". As a delicious added bonus, Dusty's version of "Mockingbird" appears to be a "mock duet" in which she sings both the high and low parts. (That is an assumption on my part, so please excuse me if I got it wrong.) Okay, so maybe tracks 11 through 14 aren't among the finest ever laid to vinyl, but that seems nitpicky in a 15 song album, so I still feel compelled to give this one 5 stars. And the reviewer also got it right in referring to the credible reproduction of the Wall of Sound. Better yet, Dusty Springfield was one of the few who had the voice to stand up to that kind of powerful orchestration.

One of the Best Albums of the 1960's!!

This is in my opinion Dusty Springfield's best album other than Dusty In Memphis.
She covers some great tunes.
Check out the title songs "I Only Want To Be With You" and "Stay Awhile"
also, "24 Hours From Tulsa", and her amazing cover of the Supremes classic "When The Lovelight Shines Through His Eyes".
I have the vinyl version of this, and its one of the few albums I can play without skipping one song.

Dusty Springfield---one of the BEST

It seems that Dusty S. was so underrated and perhaps even under-recognized as pne of the greatest female artists of her generation. Her incredibly great soulful voice along with her choice of music put her in the Best of the Best singers ever!!

Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, the sultry intimacy and heartbreaking urgency of Springfield's voice transcended image and fashion, embracing...
