Released in the U.S. in slightly altered form as Two Wheels Good in 1985, after Steve McQueen’s estate initially objected, Steve McQueen strikes the perfect balance between that era’s technological quirks and advances and singer-songwriter Paddy McAloon’s smooth, airy, deceptively perverse, hook-induced pop music. Working with producer Thomas Dolby, whose propensity for treating a song’s arrangement with the spatial concerns of an interior decorator, brings these songs into thrilling full-color. Prefab Sprout delivered an obscure, richly layered classic. For all the sleek features and shiny veneers, the strong emotional poignancy of the album’s best songs cannot be polished away. “When the Angels” addresses the sadness of Marvin Gaye’s inexplicable death. “Moving the River” reflects on McAloon’s own dreams of immortality. “Appetite” traces the emotional arc of a young pregnant girl. For this 2007 expanded edition, McAloon went into the studio in 2006 and cut eight tracks acoustically, offering an “unplugged” view of the tunes. His voice and passion for the material is strong throughout.

Best Money I Ever Spent!

Old Dolby did a masterful job of re-mixing this classic. It's really like getting 19 totally new Prefab Sprout songs. Paddy's acoustic version of 'Appetite' alone is worth the price of the whole cd.

The remastering of this beautiful album is excellent. The music is timeless and classic and the new acoustic versions are wonderful. Like Crowded Houses' Woodface album, a wonderful coming of age recording that has sat well in my collection for 20 years. A must.

Thomas Dolby sets the standard for remastering a classic

I've listened to "Two Wheels Good/Steve McQueen" hundreds of times over the past 15 years. When I listened to the remastered edition of "Steve McQueen" for the first time today, I heard sounds and nuances that I had never heard before--and I don't own an expensive stereo system. It literally sounds like you're in the studio with the band as they're recording it. I've purchased more than my share of reissues from the 1980s, and this is hands-down the best. I had high expectations when I heard that Thomas Dolby was remastering the album last year; after all, he produced the original back in 1985. Well, believe what you've heard: it sounds insanely good! Since this is an import, you'll save some money buying the album on iTunes. Still, I'd also recommend buying the physical CDs. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to adequately describe what a wonderful album this is. It's a timeless classic that deserves to be discovered by new fans and rediscovered by old fans alike.
