iTunes Review

Collected here are the two albums Syreeta Wright made in collaboration with Stevie Wonder during his early Seventies heyday: 1972’s Syreeta (tracks 1-9) and 1974’s Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta (tracks 10-20). Inspired by his love for Syreeta (they were married for 18 months prior to the production of these albums), Wonder produced music wrapped in warm, full arrangements and blossoming with layers of texture and melody. “I Love Every Little Thing About You,” “Baby Don’t You Let Me Lose This” and “Come and Get This Stuff” should all have been huge hits: they are as catchy and danceable as the brightest Motown singles, yet they also anticipate the future sounds of disco and boogie. On every song Syreeta’s voice is captured in crystal detail, and Wonder clearly felt the optimism and passion of young love embodied by her sinuous soprano. While it’s impossible not feel the smile in Syreeta’s songs, she also translated some of Stevie most somber, introspective works. “Black Maybe” and “Heavy Day” are gorgeous renditions of pensiveness and uncertainty, while Syreeta’s version of “She’s Leaving Home” is one of the most striking Beatles covers ever recorded. Syreeta’s albums might have been eclipsed by the monumental achievements of Wonder’s later work, but these two lp-length collaborations are Motown’s most quiet, colorful secrets.

Album clarification and iTunes advantage...

This is a good buy because the first nine tracks are actually from the second album they did together. You can only get the first nine tracks off the Syreeta Asian import. So the iTunes version of Stevie Wonder presents Syreeta is actually TWO ALBUMS of Syreeta and Stevie and you cant' go wrong there. I agree with all the other reviewers on their social and musical critique of this offering. A must have for Stevie diehards, especially lovers of northern soul aka soulies in the UK!! Amazon needs to get with it and find the real Syreeta hits!! Soul 4 Real, Soul 4 Ever!

A MUST HAVE...

This CD encapsulates the feeling of the black community in the 70's...the hope and promise of the post civil rights movement, and the remorse of losing great leaders, the CD reflects a community looking within, and Stevie and Syretta take us on that journey. This CD has combined the original "Stevie Presents" CD with an earlier one, (Stevie Wonder Presents Syretta starts at the tune "I'm Going Left"). In the album format, the second side was a concept side, which ran non-stop from "Cause We've Ended Now As Lovers". This was the more popular side, and black radio at the time would play the WHOLE SIDE NON-STOP. The second side, romantic in nature, again reflects a community returning to its own inside issues, which at the time was finding a place for the black woman, unde-represented during the struggle for civil rights. A must have.

Happiness

Too true - any fan of Stevie Wonder will get there money's worth with this collection. Make sure to check out her version of 'I Love Every Little Thing About You' and then Stevie's version on 'Music Of My Mind' which is essentially the companion piece to Stevie Wonder presents Syreeta ('To Know You is To Love You' is the perfect introduction to the magic that was Stevie and Syreeta). Her cover of The Beatles 'She's Leaving Home' never fails to bring me to tears - it is heart achingly beautiful! and 'Happiness'? a sweet summer melody...Enjoy!!

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

One of Motown's more underappreciated female vocalists, Syreeta is best known for her association with Stevie Wonder during his creative peak in the '70s. Born Rita Wright in Pittsburgh, Syreeta was raised mostly in Detroit, and started out at Motown as a secretary who did session vocals on the side — much like Martha Reeves. As Rita Wright, she recorded her debut single, the Ashford & Simpson composition "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You," in 1967. She met Stevie Wonder the following...
