Album Review

There are 21 cuts on this Hip-O collection of Van Morrison's Greatest Hits. The interesting thing is that of these 21 cuts, only about half of them will be recognizable to the casual Van Morrison fan, as they come from his Bang sides and the far more popular Warner Brothers singles of the early '70s. As it should be, although there is one glaring omission: "Tupelo Honey" is absent from the song list. The rest may not have been greatest hits in America, but they do represent a fine — if arguable — selection of the material from the late '70s, '80s, and '90s. "Dweller on the Threshold" is here (though it sounds like an alternate take!) There is a bona fide alternate take of "The Healing Game" that sounds more like a well-executed demo and has plenty of Celtic soul. "Someone Like You" is here, as is "Wavelength," and some tunes that deserved far better than they got: "Tore Down à la Rimbaud," "Real Real Gone," "Bright Side of the Road," "Days Like This," and "Stranded." The early tunes are immediately recognizable, from "Brown Eyed Girl," "Gloria," "Here Comes the Night," "Domino," "Moondance," "Wild Night," and "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven)." In sum, as far as the many repackaged greatest hits, this is one of the better ones as it is cross-licensed and contains a true evolutionary portrait of the artist on a journey that certainly winds and turns back on itself even as it moves forward. This is a good one with fine sound. [Polydor's 2008 Limited Edition box set included 20 bonus tracks across a three-CD package.]

This is a cool CD

I might be only twelve but my orchestra teacher gave us the sheet music to moondance and also told us that this song was in August Rush (my Favorite Movie). I looked up the song Moondance on the computer and behold! I stumbled upon this song after seeing the composer's name was the same as the one on my sheet music. After I told My dad, He got me this CD and I Realy liked it. His songs might be old but they are appearentlly still listened to today. I recomend them to anybody.

Excellent stuff!

This is perhaps the BEST iTunes purchase I have ever made (and the only purchase that I have ever wanted to review). As a casual Van Morrison fan, I was a little bit confused and hesitant as to which of his albums to purchase, and I'm very happy to have chosen this one. This album is rich with so many things: texture; mood; passion; fun -- that it creates a wonderful backdrop while working, relaxing, and/or watching the world go by. Every time I listen to this collection, I can't help but feel great about life and living.

iTunes Listened...

And got us the extended version of this collection. Thank you for giving us the chance to get songs that were not available before. Now iTunes just needs to get the Them catalog.

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
