iTunes Review

Throughout his 40-year career Van Morrison has been a singer without peer. From his earliest days as a tough R&B singer with his Belfast-based group Them, through his constant evolution as an interpreter of folk, soul, country, jazz, Celtic traditionals, and New Age meditations, Morrison has put his unmistakable phrasings and passion on every note he sings. Summing up in 21 tracks this incredibly deep and diverse career is no easy task. But for someone seeking a point of entry, this collection spans his entire career and features the expected hits: “Gloria,” “Here Comes the Night,”  “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Moondance,” “Domino,”  “Wild Night,” “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven),” “Wavelength” and “Have I Told You Lately,” with a healthy cross-section of lesser known worthy contenders: “Tore Down a la Rimbaud,” “In the Garden.” Many tracks have been re-mastered and benefit from the extra richness in tone. Listeners suitably impressed should scour Morrison’s extensive catalog, as albums such as Astral Weeks, St. Dominic’s Preview, Veedon Fleece, Into the Music, Common One and Hymns to the Silence among the many, each feature their own rewarding highlights.

Another Best of?

Don't get me wrong, I love Van (although his live shows are becoming more and more spotty), but do we really need another best of album? The last thing he needs to be putting out is another compilation with "Gloria" on it, shocked that "Brown Eyed Girl" isn't here as well. Focus on putting out something in the way of No Guru, No Method, No Teacher, Enlightenment or Poetic Champions Compose as opposed to a new way of packaging old hits. (With all that said... I still bought the album)

Try Me

Popular music the last 50 years doesn't get any better than this! Van The Man, aka The Belfast Cowboy, is in that rarified class with Brother Ray and Dylan and would be more widely recognized as such if it weren't for his blessed allergy to fame. Give us the full album PLEASE. Two- and three-disc versions are avaliable in the UK for those of you truly looking to get healed.

some not so greatest hits

Dweller on the Threshold? Tore Down a la Rimbaud? I'm the ultimate Van-head, but some of these so called greatest hits simply represent albums. This is a very comprehensive collection but some of the albums on which some of these songs reside are Greatest Hits unto themselves. Case in point: Wavelength and Real Real Gone from the album Wavelength and Enlightenment respectively. And while I really like The Healing Game, Precious Time and Stranded don't represent the best of new millenium Van Morrison. Always curious are these Van Morrision retrospectives. Doesn't a new one come out every six months?

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected...
