iTunes Review
Waukesha, Wisconsin’s BoDeans have been performing their unpretentious no-frills roots rock since the mid-80s when their music fell under the alternative ‘college rock’ umbrella. In 2008, with the release of their eighth studio album, Still, the BoDeans more closely align with the alt-country movement. Their tunes strike a stronger western theme, their accents shift towards Americana, and their pop energy has been slightly modified to reflect the years of road wear and life experience. No longer kids singing about the first flush of love, Kurt Neumann and Sammy Llanas turn their attentions to the resilient human spirit, using their natural harmonies to find the way out of life’s difficult puzzles. Producer T-Bone Burnett densely packs the mix with solid walls of guitar with the occasional accordion sneaking past. “Waste A Lifetime,” “Wonder Wonder” and “Found a Reason” chase that familiar mid-western terrain ably farmed by Tom Petty with a touch of the raucous punk energy that always inspired (if never informed) the band’s traditional sound.

Still Got It
This entire release is so GREAT! "Round Here Somewhere," practically tells the story of the band itself. "Looking for potential that got left behind". "Round Here Somewhere" showcases has classic Bodeans vocal that distinguish the band. It conjures "Dreams" and even "Idaho," two BoDeans' tracks with shared lead vocals. "Every Day" This song is MEGA GREAT and is a winner (probably headed toward the radio). Love to love, time for two, hope to hope... You will love this. So upbeat. Get it NOW!. "The First Time," a tune that the band's been playing live for a while, is fresh, fun and singable. One of the hits on this release for sure. "Wonder, Wonder" is classic BoDeans' love song material. A relationship story, the tune harkens pop songs of yesterday -- rhyming, jangling and repeating. "Wonder Wonder" is an old Sammy classic from 1999. Sammy didn't trust the lyrics and cut off "And I wonder wonder what she's doing tonight" to "Well I Wonder Wonder" Those who know Lowen & Navarro will hear their sound in the beginning of the song. "Willin" is an old Sammy Song from around 2000. "Waste a Lifetime" is an old Kurt song from around 1999, very solid. For this to be song 11 on the disc you know this release is pure gold. "Found Me a Reason" is also a Sammy tune. This will be a great live song. "Hearing" this song will become a favorite song. No doubt (and another radio favorite). If anyone saw the MOVIE, Friday Night Lights, the band that did the soundtrack, Explosion In The Sky, has a song from the movie called, Your Hand In Mine, listen to the guitar work and you will hear the similarities. Pure beauty. "Pretty Ghost" is not classic Bodeans, Bon Jovi-like. The vocals are eerie and remind me of a newer Jovi-style song. Sammy has a cool song live here, but he did the Hey Pretty Girl fake voice on this song. It's guitar is very good, "Lucille" shines in the same vane with fun, nearly flirty lyrics. Cool rocker, Bruce Springsteen-like. "Arms" - slow song that ends the which is much like "Once In A While" and some Wire Fence stuff that Kurt has been working on. "Breathe"-The only throw away song on the disc. Unapologetically poppy rock that recalls both classic Springsteen and the Jayhawks. Frontmen Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas still have the best harmonies anywhere. Kurt is a pop star, Sammy sings gritty. Greatness. I can't wait for their national tour to kick-off.
T-Bone Burnett Produced "Still" An Awesome Thing
Opening with the haunting "Pretty Ghost," BoDeans add an eclectic album to their catalog. "'Round Here Somewhere" is an autobiography of sorts for the band. "Willin'" is classic 'Deans music, along the lines of "Paradise." "Lucille" is bound to be a classic in concerts. Moving ahead to "Everyday," this should get radio airplay if the Clear Channels of the world get an open mind. Download the single and you'll see why ~ but why do that when you can get the whole set and enjoy "Breathe," "Hearing," and end with the outstanding "Arms." Some of the other songs I failed to mention stand well on their own. Bound to be a great addition to the BoDeans catalog and one of the best CDs of 2008!
