iTunes Review
Germany’s Scorpions have been one of the most popular heavy metal bands of their era and after decades have decided to release one final album. As unlikely as it may seem, everyone in is prime form. Singer Klaus Meine brings the same punch he brought to classics such as “Rock You Like A Hurricane” and “No One Like You” while Rudolph Schenker struts out the power chords and Matthias Jabs throws in his riffs for their classic twin-guitar attack. It’s as if time is standing still. “Raised On Rock” has the sound of their classic metal attack. The title track shuffles past with the urgency the band showed on their classic albums back in the ‘70s and ‘80s prime. “The Good Die Young” features the band’s trademark harmonies and arena-rock drama. “No Limit” ramps up a highway gallop. “Lorelei” and “Sly” classify as pure power-ballad theatrics. With their usual rock solid performance and classic songwriting precision, Scorpions finish their career in enviable form.

Awesome! :D
Klaus Meine and company have announced their retirement after 40 years in the business, with Sting In The Tail to be their final offering. If you're a Scorpions fan you already know that they deliver each and every time, and the fact that such a consistent band is hanging it up is a loss to the rock 'n' roll world.
The Scorpions have always released albums as a reason to hit the road, not the other way around, and they have a number of gems in their back catalog along with a couple of clunkers. If Sting In The Tail is in fact their retirement CD then I want them going out with a strong album. I couldn't help but be a little nervous as their previous CD, Humanity Hour 1, was less than stellar in my opinion, as there was no doubt that outside writers like Marti Fredriksen, James Michael and Desmond Child were a strong influence, and when two of them were also producing -- well, all bets were off for a true Scorpions effort.
Which brings us to Sting In The Tail -- it's a slick, bombastic record that sounds like Crazy World meets Face The Heat meets Unbreakable -- it is a strong album right out of the blocks. Returning for this effort are Mikael Nord Andersson and Martin Hansen who co-wrote with the band on Humanity Hour 1 -- once again they co-wrote, and also handled production duties on ths CD. Unlike the last time around, the producers didn't keep the band confined, instead they allowed them to cut loose. The result is a rockin' fun album with riffs-o-plenty.
Guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Mathias Jabs tear it up and Klaus Meine has never sounded better than on this effort. The album is launched with the rocker "Raised On Rock" and there are many more great tunes such as "Turn You On", "Sting In The Tail", "Spirit Of Rock", the ballads "The Good Die Young" (featuring former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen), "Sly" and the closer "The Best Is Yet To Come", which I think matches previous efforts like "Wind Of Change" or "Holiday".
Sting In The Tail is a near perfect album and one hell of a way to wind up a career. The Scorpions have been a consistently strong band, both live and in the studio, more so than most classic rock groups still out there right now. When was the last time the Rolling Stones issued an album that blew your mind, and do they kill each and every night? I rest my case. While, I'm saddened to see the Scorpions walking off into the sunset and entering retirement, I know nothing lasts forever except the memories and more importantly the music. In this case the classy German rockers close out their career with their best effort in 20 years.
Farewell to the Scorps!
This album is good for a final effort from Klaus and the boys. At the pinacal of the bands career back in the late 80's they were absolutely one of the best bands in the world. Saw them open for Nugent in 1980 and was amazed at the energy of the band. Saw tem again on the Crazy World Tour and they had'nt any of the previous energy. Time catches up to all of us (45 yrs. old myself) Some of the formulas on this album are recycled - but there are some new chops and fresh licks. The band is true to its sound. You can always recognize a Scorpions song within its first moments. I will still be crankin the Scorps in my car with fond memories of the "Hair Metal" days gone by....thanks guys for all the great tunes and best wishes to all of you in the future.
A bit overproduced, but a worthy farewell album.
The earlist incarnation of Scorpions was founded in 1965. Think about that. 45 of history. 45 years of cycling band members, ballads, riffs, solos, battles, tours, positive and negative critical reception, musical experimentation and stagnation, headbanging, and pure rock and roll. And now it's coming to an end. This is the last album. There will be one last tour, and Scorpions will then cease to exist.
If you're going to leave, go out with a bang. Never have these been words more true than in the case of Sting in the Tail. The ballads are fiercer, the hard rock more powerful, and the production amplified. Amplified a bit too much for my taste, but it's a small price to pay. My personal favorite track is The Good Die Young, which features former Nightwish vocalist and solo artist Tarja Trununen.
Scorpions, I salute you. It's been a blast. This album truly lives up to its role as one last larger-than-life experience.
