iTunes Review
Derek Webb’s Stockholm Syndrome is designed to make waves and upset the complacent. While the ex-Caedmon’s Call member has long shown a maverick streak, this album is confrontational even by his standards. Webb challenges fellow Christians at every turn, avoiding feel-good spirituality in favor of scathing satire. Tracks like “The Spirit vs. the Kick Drum” and “What You Give Up to Get It” attack hypocrisy with razor-keen wit, while “Becoming a Slave” and “Jenna & Jimmy” grapple with moral compromise. “Freddie, Please” (a weird fusion of doo-wop and electronica) and “American Flag Umbrella” (set to a ghostly, piano-centered track) take some bold swipes at bigotry. Avoiding his usual folk-rock ambiance, Webb surrounds his vocals with eerie samples and throbbing cyborg beats as he preaches a set of mind-prodding sermons that refuse to observe polite standards. By any measure, Stockholm Syndrome stands as one of the most controversial — and compelling — Christian releases of the year.
Customer Reviews
great, but...
It's a great album and it's great that itunes has it, but if you really want to enjoy it, go buy it off of derek's website (derekwebb.com). then you can get the uncensored version (this itunes version is missing an entire song!) and it will actually be cheaper ($7.99). Great album. New direction for Derek. Give it a chance.
Extremely disappointed
This album is a far cry from She Must & Shall Go Free and I See Thing Upside Down. The entire album has a techno/electric theme musically that I have a hard time getting into. It's just not my thing. Lyrically, Derek Webb become one of my favorite artists with his brutally honest introspective songs. With this album his lyrics tend to "challenge" others by slamming their beliefs on controversial issues. While I agree with some of the points that he's making in his songs, I don't think that trying to put others through a guilt trip is the way to win the argument. I was very disappointed, this is the last time a buy a Derek Webb album without listening to it first.
Finally
There are practically no Christian artists that can be considered "Indie." Derek Webb is one of the few. I am a new listener, and I will definitely be checking out everything he releases in the future. This is truly music for the person that is tired of the redundancy of Christian radio as we know it. Some of these artists may have right hearts, but their songs suffer from bland creativity. When you crave something more, come and check out Webb, with no strings attached, no cliches, and no regard for getting on your mom's favorite radio station. I appreciate Derek immensely.
