Album Review

On his fourth solo album, the Ambassador, aka William Branch, continues to rap on behalf of his Christian beliefs. Branch may possess a Masters degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, but as a rapper, he is concerned with spreading the message through the usual patter and doggerel, employing a vernacular speech peppered with contemporary references. He is not above cliché, noting, for instance, in the lead-off track, "A-M," that Jesus Christ is "more than the best thing since sliced bread." Sports provide useful touchstones, as when, in "Mind Made Up," the Resurrection is compared to heavyweight boxer Mohammad Ali's "rope-a-dope" strategy in his 1974 comeback fight against George Foreman and when, in "Pop Pop Pop," the Lord is seen as an unbeatable basketball player: "Nobody can block his free throw." Film and television also come up, whether Branch is mentioning Forrest Gump or Crash, or, in "Favor," noting "We were desperate like them housewives" before God's favor was obtained. And miracles are updated to contemporary needs in the same song: "He didn't even have TV, now he has cable." Branch sets his raps to familiar hip-hop beats and employs sung choruses like his secular peers, who also come in for comment, if not by name. "Somebody said it's a hard knock life," Branch says in "Trust in You," meaning Jay-Z (who was in turn quoting the orphans in the musical Annie), "but I got a hard knock Christ." Some of the faithful may find such pop culture associations irreverent, but the Ambassador is trying to negotiate with a new, young audience in Stop the Funeral, and one of Christianity's qualities has always been its remarkable adaptability across cultures, which believers cite as a mark of the universality of its message of redemption.

Awesome artist

This guys great! Surprised only a couple reviews. Praise the lord for Christian rap/r&b artists! Come on nuuuah! Gotta get down sometimes and this is the way to do it! Whoo baby ya!!!!!!!

AMBA - Pretty good album!

1. A-M (5/5) - This is a very tight Intro. The beat is chill, and the flow is crazy. Confidence about repping Jesus is displayed. Ambassador is back with the right way to start it off, with Jesus at the center. He makes it clear that this is why he does what he does.
2. Get With Us (3.5/5) - This song has a decent beat and the flows are good. I'm not feeling it as much as A-M, but it's still good.
3. Mind Made Up (5/5) - Amazing beat and the hook is so catchy. This song sounds like a secular rap song. There is definitely a professionalism that you can feel in this song.
4. Pop Pop Pop (2.5/5) - The beat isn't all that great and the flow isn't very good. Nothing much special about this track except for the message (if you can get it). The message is that God is liable to "pop" your plans with His. Follow His plans.
5. Up Down (5/5) - Really good song. Unique beat and Charmaine is a great feature in this song. Ambassador does his thing with the rapping.
6. Favor (5/5) - Okay, this is one of my favorite songs on the album. Excellent beat, great rapping, great feature with Canton. The message is straight.
7. Bring You Out (4/5) - Good song, better than Get With Us, but not a highlight of the album.
8. Talk This Way (5/5) - Great song. I love the synth-like thing in the background on the hook. Also, has a good beat. This is also one of my favorites.
9. Crumbs (4/5) - Great message. Not a very good beat, but the song is pretty chill. This is a good song to meditate on and think about.
10. Trust In You (3/5) - This song is okay, but I can't really see myself listening to it very much. It's not really my style for rap.
11. Nothing Like Us (4.5/5) - This is a good song to worship to. I feel this one in my spirit.
12. Your Love (4/5) - Good song. The vocals in this song are a lot better than the beat. The message is, of course, good as always.
13. Put It Down (5/5) - This is probably my favorite song on the album. It's not just cause I go for the bumping ones, but this song is epic. This song could just about contest any secular rap song with its beat and flow. Definitely feeling it.
14. The Reunion Cypha (4/5) - Everybody talks about this song being awesome, but I don't think it's all that great. The rapping is pretty amazing, but the beat gets old really fast.

Consequently, that is my track-by-track review of "Stop the Funeral." There is definitely a professionalism in the project.
