Album Review

The children's label High Windy Audio here creates a virtual Pete Seeger children's "greatest-hits" compilation by licensing tracks from '50s and '60s Folkways albums Abiyoyo, Song & Play Time with Pete Seeger, Pete Seeger Sings Folk Songs for Young People, Birds, Beasts, Bugs & Little Fishes, and Birds, Beasts, Bugs & Bigger Fishes. The stories are Seeger's celebrated "Foolish Frog" and "Abiyoyo," and otherwise a common element of many of the songs is the need to repeat and add to sequences of words or sounds à la "The 12 Days of Christmas." In "Green Grass Grew All Around," "She'll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain," and "I Know an Old Lady," Seeger sings verse after verse, adding a new part each time and so involving youngsters who will delightedly struggle to keep up. A legend on the back cover reads, "Ages 2-12," which is a broad range, but the album title is more accurate: These are songs and stories for little children. Note that this version of "Abiyoyo," the first that Seeger recorded, was part of an album originally called Sleep-Time: Songs and Stories, and in keeping with that lullaby function, it drifts along at a low volume for several minutes at the end, so that the young listener can fall asleep.

Good Children's Music

This is a very good album of just children's music by Pete Seeger, especially Abiyoyo. Hey, in case you didn't know, Abiyoyo is based on a South African story. Pete made the song up for his kids. Anyway, I have this CD and I used to listen to it a lot when I was a kid. I loved the songs a lot, and if you want good kids' music, buy this album! Here are my ratings for the songs from best to worst (not that any of them are bad). 1. Abiyoyo 2. Foolish Frog 3. Frog Went A-Courting 4. Mister Rabbit 5. Racoon's Got a Bushy Tail 6. Green Grass Grew All Around 7. She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain 8. I Know an Old Lady (Look below: "Lady" has a capital A in it) 9. Skip to My Lou

Am I the only one who sees that Barney was a total rip off of Pete? The original rocks with out all the cutsie!

What memories

My kids (now teens) loved Pete Seeger! They sang Abiyoyo probably a gazillion times! These are the songs we don't want to lose -- classics sung by a classic. No electronics, just good ol' banjo and the clear voice of Pete Seeger. Love this music!
