Album Review

Stormbringer falls short of the excellence of Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, but nonetheless boasts some definite classics — including the fiery "Lady Double Dealer," the ominous title song (a goth metal treasure), the sweaty "High Ball Shooter," and the melancholy ballad "Soldier of Fortune." Most of the other songs on the decent, if uneven, Stormbringer (which Metal Blade reissued on CD in the early '90s) are not essential. Like Come Taste the Band, Stormbringer will be of interest to Deep Purple's more enthusiastic fans, rather than casual listeners who would be much better off starting out with either of the above-mentioned studio projects or the live Made in Japan.

A Hidden Treasure

I first bought this album in the mid 90's amidst a Deep Purple craze and was a bit disappointed in the begining, because I was expecting it to be as heavy as the previous one, "Burn". It shows the band flirting with Soul, which was a trend in Europe at the time. There are 2 rockers : "Stormbringer" and "Lady Double Dealer". Having said that, it's my favorite Deep Purple album. The lyrics are surprisingly comtemplative and considerably less shallow than in most of their other releases, and David Coverdale and Glen Hughes sing their hearts out throughout. Don't be put off by the more mellow pace of the album, because it has some of the most beautiful soul-influenced music that white musicians have ever recorded. In short, a beautiful album, which I would definitely recommend to friends.

Looks Good To Me

I only have four songs from this entire album, but they're all really good, so I think I might buy the rest. The cover is very enrapturing. The tornado...a barn...a perfect imagery of prosperity after the impossible. Only a little frightening if you look deep into the cover. If you've ever been in a tornado, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Storm Clouds Were Brewing

A so-so follow-up to powerful Burn LP. Tension was again running high as RB was looking to get out. Stormbringer 'brings' it along with Highball Shooter and Lady Double Dealer but there's something missing here. Hughes was already leaning towards a more jazzy influence which showed itself when Tommy Bolin took over for Blackmore on Come Taste The Band. Some success with Solider of Fortune but not much else to hang your hat on. Hold On and The Gypsy have their moments but the end was near for DP's MK111 lineup and it showed with Stormbringer.
