Album Review

Story Like a Scar is technically the New Amsterdams' fourth release. It only gets this distinction, however, because the supposedly bleaker Killed or Cured got shelved so Matt Pryor and crew could instead hash out new songs that were quickly becoming Story Like a Scar. So it must be said that curiosity was piqued to see what the group had produced to cause abandonment of the previous record. Masters of introspective music perfect for both extended night driving in solitude and sunny afternoon moments of relaxation, the New Amsterdams show off both sides on this album. "The Death of Us" starts the album softly with light-feeling instrumentation, highlighted by gentle drumming and a sweeping harmonica laid under Pryor's trademark earnest and tender voice. "Turn Out the Light" remains gently warm and sentimental amid handclaps, while the short blast of "Intelligent Design" is by far the hardest rocking (by the band's standards) of the album. And the sparse, barely audible "Your Ghost" brings to mind Pryor hunched over in the corner of a dark, smoky jazz bar singing to no one. Taken alone, the songs are enjoyable and affecting numbers that will no doubt find one contentedly tapping along at times on one's steering wheel. However, on an album level, the songs don't always flow with one another and by the end, Story Like a Scar just seems a bit unfinished. With Pryor's desire to finish this record instead of releasing the other one, expectations might have been raised too high as the album finishes almost too soon, leaving one with a feeling of wanting something more.

Customer Reviews

The New Ams Best Work by Far.

the people who are giving this record bad reviews are idiots. i like this record far more than the other stuff because there is nothing out there that sounds like this. just him on acoustic is boring, and it has been done, and will be done forever. this band has blossomed so much with this release. waaaay better than the get up kids. songs 1 and 2 just absolutely blow you away. buy it now..buy it now..buy it now. if you dont like it, you dont know music, and should go back listening to all that new bad music on epitaph.

Seriously, this was well worth the wait!

Matt Pryor & Crew have put out another amazing album. There is a good mix of old sounding New Ams, old sounding Get Up Kids, and new New Ams stuff. This is their most diverse recording yet. Not bad from the guy who supposedly invented Emo'.

Awesome Album

This cd is great. It is a little different from their past albums, but it is really good. The only bad song is "Bad Liar". Other than track 3, every song is good. This cd will really grow on you. The people who gave this album a bad review are probably the dumb whiny people who always whine and groan when a band changes its' sound a little. Buy this album, you'll be impressed.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Lawrence, KS

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Indie rock outfit the New Amsterdams were pioneered by Get Up Kids vocalist/guitarist Matthew Pryor as a side project, and his personal emotion continued to be redefined and molded upon a musical cast of energetic pop. Joining Pryor were drummer Jake Cardwell, guitarist Alex Brahl, and Get Up Kids bassist Robert Pope. Since forming the Get Up Kids in 1996, Pryor needed another outlet for his stripped melodies to sheer off the typical emo associations...
