iTunes Review

Thanks to Todd Rundgren’s carefully crafted production Straight Up, Badfinger’s third studio album, fits comfortably in the ‘70s continuum. The songs are, at heart, pop songs that would’ve easily belonged to the mid-‘60s, however, Rundgren settles the tunes down into a polished-but-not-sleek coat of adult textures perfect for folks growing older but still in love with the sounds of their youth. “Take It All” is a strong opener and Pete Ham’s “Baby Blue” is the blueprint for the new-wave power-pop to come. “Sweet Tuesday Morning” is a solemn folk ballad perfect for the rainy season. “Day After Day” was the mega-hit and is another perfect song (and the blueprint for Joe Jackson’s splendid “Breaking Us In Two”). “Sometimes” is charging hard rock with its guitars front and center. “Perfection” uses a great slap-back vocal effect. “It’s Over” features further snarling guitars and organs aiming for the heavens. The bonus version of “Name of the Game” allows the listener to compare it to the album version to hear how the band’s sound evolved with Rundgren at the board.

Musical Mastery from Apple's *Other* Best Band

Quite simply, this album showcases Badfinger at the peak of their creative consciousness. There's not a single bad (re: filler) track on here; and one listen to the first tune ('Take It All', sung brilliantly by Pete, with amazing background vocals by Joey and Tom) and you can really sense how 'on' Badfinger were. Sadly, the inspiration that filled this record (and the follow-up, A**) would not propel them as high as they should have been (despite the chart successes of 'Baby Blue' and 'Day After Day', true masterpieces). "I'll Be The One", an aborted Apple single included here, is truly the best song they never released. The melody, the harmonic structure, the country-esque beat, and the Beatle-like ending are so good, you'll want to repeat this one over and over. And sonically? This album has *never* sounded better. These new remasters bring new life, air and dimension into these albums (which suffered slightly from over-processing on the early 90s remasters). Here, voices are clear and crisp, drums snap, bass thumps, guitars & organs ring and sustain, and the stereo imaging is something you've just not experienced, even on the original vinyl release. A must-have for Badfinger fans, they'll fast become the 'Apple of your Eye'. Rock on.

Are the Beatles next ?

After all... this is APPLE CORPs. One of the few that are left.....

Straight Up

Given a listen by anyone and this Recording would have to find its way into the top 100 of all time records No Dice is a close second and is worthy of top 100 standing also but this record is flawless and without any filler tracks Just a masterpiece to the ears

Biography

Formed: 1968 in England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

There are few bands in the annals of rock music as star-crossed in their history as Badfinger. Pegged as one of the most promising British groups of the late '60s and the one world-class talent ever signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label that remained with the label, Badfinger enjoyed the kind of success in England and America that most other bands could only envy. Yet a string of memorable hit singles — "Come and Get It," "No Matter What," "Day After Day," and "Baby Blue" — saw almost...
