40 Year Old Virgin director Judd Apatow asked Loudon Wainwright to write a few songs for the soundtrack to his follow-up film Knocked Up. Wainwright obliged with this collection, a collaboration with album co-producer Joe Henry that’s pretty much Wainwright working as usual. Comic and sad, smart-assed and sincere, Wainwright can turn on a single line. He even tries shutting his mouth for the instrumentals. The pedal-steel led “Naomi,” in particular, purrs with affection. Wainwright attacks Peter Blegvad’s “Daughter” with the verve and cheek of one of his own and interpolates cabaret for “Final Frontier,” soft-show for Mose Allison’s ”Feel So Good” and ragtime for “So Much to Do.” But while Wainwright has no trouble skipping from genre to genre, he’s still at his most affecting when he sings it straight, as he does for the heart to heart intensity of “Lullaby.” And a mid-life crisis anthem such as the bluesy “Doin’ the Math” is pure vintage Wainwright as well.

Stange Weirdos
Ok...There's Pc and Mac corporate....counter culture...You (I Tunes) once went against the grain but it's another huge sellout to offer Daughter as Album only...The rest of the tunes are good and Loudon has really reached another audience here but I Tunes...be ashamed
III gets IIII
LW III gets 3 JUST for his cover of DAUGHTER...but I have to put it in context; Go see KNOCKED UP and hang around thru the end credits...if you've got kids, or plan to, or even if ya just got the vaguest jaded pulse of a heartbeat, it should get ya...cheers.
You can buy Daughter as a single...
Even though here Daughter is listed as an "Album Only" track, you can buy it as a single -- look up Loudon Wainwright III, and alongside all of his albums that iTunes carries, there's actually, for 99 cents, a specific "Daughter" single. Nice album. Grey in LA and Daughter are the highlights. But any Loudon Wainwright fan must get Last Man on Earth -- up there with Blood on the Tracks, Tunnel of Love, and Sea Change among great break-up albums.
