An Excellent Buy

This is any brass enthuisiast's dream album. Finally, in one collection, the incredible works of Strauss! The Heldenleben is wonderful, the Zarathustra and Don Juan elegant, but the stealer of the show goes to the Chicago Symphony's powerful performance of Till Eulenspiegel Lustige Steiche. As an orchestral musician, I must say it's the best rendition I've heard captured on recording. The CSO proves through their masterful performance why they're among the greatest orchestras in the world (and, no doubt, in history)!

Eine Alpensinfonie!

Having spent much time both listening to this album and climbing mountains, I must say that Strauss' atmospheric rendition of time spent in the hills is an absolute must-hear event. This performance by BRSO is superb in it's imitation of the sounds of nature. Just listen to the wind of the storm! Careful, it might blow you right off the cliff. The other works on this bargain two-disc set are equally evocative in their playing. I am not a musician but I do know exciting performances when I hear them. This is at the top!

Alpensymphonie

The person who mentioned Bud Herseth knows their stuff. Quite possibly the best orchestral trumpet player ever. But he is only one of an entire brass section that is legendary, and may never be equalled. Dale Clevenger, Arnold Jacobs...I can name them all. Everything about this album is wonderful. The Till rips. I can not tell you which selection is my favorite because I can not decide. Don Juan. Alpensymphonie really moves me though. Herseth doing the octaves in Also Sprach Zarathustra. This is a five star album if there ever was one. That is all I can say. Thank you very much.
