Outstanding performance
Haitink and the LSO give an outstanding performance of Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony. The Production is first rate, and Haitink is a master at intrepreting Strauss.
Five stars for Haitink
For or less for the LSO. Haitink is amazing but he has to almost pull teeth to get the LSO to respond to his vison. The LSO has always been uneven in thier output. One is struck not with an Alpine adventure (or antichrist, it's orgional title) so much as a tug of war. I keep cheering for Haitink to win but the outcome is more of a draw. -Bz
Yawn
What a real stinker. There are several FAR superior recordings/performances of this monumental work. Here, Haitink is simply not at his best. The performance is uneven and wholly inconsistent. Recommendations: Kempe, Previn or Karajan ('81).
