iTunes Review

A fairly misunderstood record in its day, Bob Dylan’s Street-Legal can now be seen as a prequel to the trilogy of Christian albums he released not long after. There’s a sense of anger, desperation and loss running through these songs, told in fascinating imagery that swirls like a pack of Tarot cards blowing in the wind. Dylan unveils a gallery of rogues, witches and wounded lovers in densely-rhymed, kaleidoscopic numbers like “Changing Of The Guards,” “No Time To Think,” and “Where Are You Tonight?” His sonic palette broadens to bring touches of Memphis-style R&B and Appalachian country to his familiar folk-rock mix. From the brooding blues of “New Pony” to the ominous Western ballad “Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power),” the album ranks among Dylan’s most eclectic works musically. Female gospel choirs, saxophones and mandolins (sometimes on the same track!) add to the album’s unusual colors. Caught up in personal turmoil and bedeviled by spiritual hunger, Dylan makes Street-Legal into a compelling account of his journey out of darkness.

Dylan's Most Undervalued Collection

First of all, I'll quote an "expert" for my review, Jonathan Lethem, a writer for Rolling Stone magazine. Since he said it already, I won't plaigarize. "...[T]his crucially cleaned-up version of possibly Dylan's most undervalued collection of songs was dropped into the marketplace so quietly that few even noticed. Since the murk of the production was the biggest obstacle to hearing Dylan walking a tightrope between divorce and Jesus, why not give it a second chance -- or a first? Just be certain you get the new version." Compare the clarity on this 2004 release to the other one (from 1978?) and you'll hear a world of difference. Check it out!

love the lyrics, love the sounds, and love dylan's singing.

it all works on this album. the longer choruses, the vocal backing, the horns and organ push dylan's singing and lyrics into memorable moments. love it!

the remastering is a revelation!

yup this album originally sounded rather flat and murky, which is a big distraction from the brilliant lyrics. well that problem is now solved with the remastered version, and this is now an album well worth owning. it's certainly different, but in this case that's a good thing!

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
