Abrasive, Intriguing "music"

Godflesh almost defies description...this album is like a mixture of Can, Napalm Death, The Cocteau Twins, and Throbbing Gristle run through a musical meat grinder. A few songs have recognizable elements of traditional metal, for example the growls and crushing detuned riffs in "Tiny Tears" and "Like Rats", but other songs defy any categorization altogether. The best example of this is the song "Pulp", which is built around a simple drum machine loop, and is composed of groans and industrial-strength guitar surges that appear almost at random. Yet, it manages to be both catchy and memorable! You'll more than likely hate this album upon your first listen, but after about three or four months it will become one of your favorites. Expand your musical horizons and give it a listen.

A MUST HAVE ALBUM!!!!

everything that justin broadrick touches(napalm death, jesu, and many other side projects) is pure gold...PREPARE TO BE DESTROYED AFTER LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM...I can't explain in less than 6000 words how fantastic this piece of audio delight is...Just find out for yourself if you're into death metal/grindcore/melvins/and heavy drum beats(via machine)

Grindcore Classic

This, along with with Godflesh's debut album, is one of the premiere records on the Earache label, and directly responsible for the creation of a 'Grindcore' genre. Clearly just as divergent from Death Metal as it is from Industrial, yet extensively utilizing elements of both, Grindcore created a niche all its own. Justin Brodrick and JC Green, with help from 'Machine' (their drum machine) embarked upon a musical journey in an entirely different direction than what was known at the time. The bottom line is this: if you enjoy driving beats, heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars (you're welcome Korn and all the other bands who picked up on that), and meanacingly growled vocals, you should check this out... but be warned: even the most hardcore death-metallers will probably get a headache from listening to this the first couple of times... :)

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Birmingham, England

Genre: Metal

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

If Black Sabbath was reborn as an industrial rock band, they'd probably sound an awful lot like Godflesh. Therefore, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Godflesh hails from the same hometown as Sabbath, the tough steel-welding town of Birmingham, England. Although a few other members passed through the Godflesh ranks over the years, the band's undisputed leader was guitarist/singer Justin Broadrick, who was present since the group's inception. Broadrick was influenced early on by heavy metal,...
