iTunes Review

SOJA's fourth studio album is also its first for ATO Records, the label co-founded by Dave Matthews. Singer/guitarist Jacob Hemphill cites Bob Marley’s Survival as the main influence for the songs on Strength to Survive. He first heard Marley’s 1979 album when his family was living in the West African country of Liberia. Then a coup began; he and his parents had to hide from the military in abandoned iron bathtubs for three days. This experience, he says, shaped his life and his music. Here, some lightly funky keyboard playing and a traditional-sounding horn section kick off the lead track, “Mentality.” It's a festive blend of roots reggae stripped down and rebuilt with jam-rock accoutrements and Hemphill’s topical musings on a world on the brink of self-destruction. The title track balances chilled-out rhythms with more urgent lyrics calling for our planet’s inhabitants to consume less while gathering the fortitude for persevering in a weary world. The band lightens the load with the mellow Lovers Rock jams “Don’t Worry” and “Tell Me.”

Beautiful Music....

I usually don't write reviews on here but after reading all of these bad reviews I've got to put in my two cents. This album is absolutely beautiful. The thing ALOT of people don't understand is as a band you have to evolve. You can't make every cd the exact same. This band is evolving perfectly and I see big things in their future. The music is amazing and you can tell the words are straight from Jacob's heart. Keep it up guys and don't listen to these so called fans (or as I call them, haters). Keep it moving. SOJA is the best.

STAYIN IRIE, BUT WHERES BOBBY LEE??? WHY SLOW JAMS ONLY??

Very Meditative words....But wheres Bobby LEE???????

SOJA can do better

I've been a diehard SOJA fan for 10 years, seen them live more times than I can remember. I just don't think this album comes close to Peace in a Time of War or Get Wiser, to me those albums are masterpieces that I've listened to all the way through hundreds of times. This album lacks the variety that those albums have, and I feel like they are veering away from their rocking out roots and finally this album doesn't even have one verse from Bobby Lee, who is my favorite member of the band and who I think adds a great change of pace to Jacobs singing. I really wanna know why they've silenced Bob in their recent albums. In my opinion there are too many love songs on this album and not enough about the state of our world and country. It's just lacking variety like their old albums.
