Delightful mix of concert, comedy and musical

I stumbled across this album by accident and haven't stopped listening to it. A retelling of "The Little Matchgirl" by Groovelily, a 3 person band out of NY, this hybrid of a concert and musical is pulled off with wit and charm. The album is a live recording and each memeber of the band plays both characters and themselves, commenting on the structure of the peice. This feeds the strenght of Goovelily in that the band members are most comfortable when they are themselves. That is not a bad thing as it allows the music to truly be the centerpeice and the characters and story serve it. The music itself is wonderous at times. Evoking the bleak, snowy darkness of New Years Eve, the three members (drums, violin and piano) stir a soft jazz feel to strong lyrics that set the stage for the action. The haunting "Last day of the Year" is a standout, as is nimble "The Sales Pitch" and the clever "Screwed-up People Make Great Art". Do yourself a favor and grab your partner sometime between December 26th and 31st, sit down, grab a wine and listen to this peice. It's worth the time and effort.

This show made me a fan!

Our season theatre tickets included "Striking 12." We started out somewhat skeptical, but were completely won over about two seconds into "Violin Ascension." Energetic, creative, humorous, and so worth your time/money... We bought the entire stack of Groovelily albums on CD on the spot after the show, as well as multiple copies of this album to share with friends and family. You'll be hooked! And don't miss the chance to see "Sleeping Beauty Wakes" if it comes to your town.

If you have not heard of Groovelily, buy this. If you have not seen Groovelily, see them. This show just opened on Broadway-get your tickets now. No other group can beat this trio for originality, sound and stage presence. Get their stuff!!!

Favoring a melodic and introspective approach to pop-rock, Groovelily is a promising group that has acquired a small following playing around the eastern U.S. in the mid-to-late 1990s. The group wouldn't have come about had singer/songwriter Valerie Vigoda not been pursuing a solo career.
