Me likey
This is great. I didn't get Nothing, because I didn't like the original. But "Stripped" is awesome. Another reviewer mentioned that it sounded like Depeche Mode. Well, give that guy a prize, as "Stripped" is a Depeche Mode cover. Some people. Anyway, these guys, along w/CSS and Stolen Babies are my favorite artists of 2006. This version of Stripped takes all the best elements of Depeche Mode and filters it through Shiny Toy Guns' prism. I like this band, because, unlike bands like Interpol and Franz Ferdinand, they don't hide their 80s influences behind hipster attitudes. I like these guys very much and they are well worth the price.
A couple of excellent new singles
What I love most about STG is the interplay of the male & female vocals - they blend and complement each other so well. It's almost hypnotic. And of course, the atypical sound they have created is just amazing as well. Both of these 2 songs are a nice companion to their original album, We Are Pilots. "Stripped" has a seductive beat that reminds me of Depeche Mode and to a lesser extent Erasure. Could make a great strip tease number. :-p "Nothing Compares 2 U" is best explained by comparing the first & second halves of the song. The first half is completely off-kilter and funky and as far-removed from the original as you are likely to hear. And it's just brilliant! The second half returns to the original version more, but it's still been stamped with that STG uniqueness. These guys are quickly becoming played in heavy rotation for me, and I hope their future releases continue to create amazing and original work.
Eeeeehhh....
Ok, don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Shiny Toy Guns and think they have some promise. However, you lose credibility once you start putting out covers. Covers are just boring nowadays. I am a HUGE Depeche Mode fan, and I just feel like that is a band nobody can touch. Just stick to making your own original music.
