Album Review

Once he signed to Warner Bros., Ray Charles adopted the '90s superstar schedule, releasing an album every three years. Strong Love Affair, the third of them (now on Quincy Jones's custom label, Qwest), is a self-production that finds Charles performing his usual mix of blues, R&B, and pop on a set of newly written songs. The material is serviceable, if generic, but what matters is Charles's typically expressive vocal performance. At 65, Charles may no longer be able to surprise us, but he doesn't seem ready to retire, and if new recordings from him risk redundancy and irrelevance, at their best they nevertheless can represent Charles as well as his earlier, revolutionary work. Strong Love Affair never tries to conform Charles to anything other than his eclectic self, and it never gets in his way.

Strong Love Affair...Semi-Strong Album

At this point, any newly discovered Ray Charles material is like finding a unique restaurant in some out-of-the-way location. It's very much welcomed, even though it may not be up to par with the best. Hearing Ray singing some heretofore unsung (pun intended) material is a real treat. The songs are pretty good, and I belief it will probably take a few listenings to find them catchy. The production is glossy but sometimes too glossy.(The treatments sound a little too '80's.) And I miss hearing Ray and his piano(s). However, the fun stuff abounds, ie., when he is over-dubbing his own voice (as in the title tune), some poppin' horn charts and good solos, (again, not enough Ray!) Since I have not found the CD anyplace else beside on I-Tunes, I would like to know more production notes, personnel and recording dates. Long live Ray Charles!

Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis...
