Album Review
Obviously, the punishing volume and intensity that define speed metal pioneers, Slayer, arrive in a more diluted form on The String Quartet Tribute to Slayer: The Evil You Dread. But that doesn't mean The Evil You Dread can't invoke similar feelings of tension, anxiety, and even aggression. These arrangements for violin, viola, and cello are often much slower than the originals, but by concentrating on the elaborate dynamics essential to Slayer's music, the album succeeds not only as a worthy tribute album, but as an outstanding illustration of the string instruments' adaptive qualities. Standouts include "Postmortem," with its grating electric cello solo; the menacing chord shifts of "Mandatory Suicide" and "Dead Skin Mask"; and "War Ensemble's reverb-drenched violins, which seem to plunge ever downward, spiraling with dizzying speed. The Evil You Dread will certainly provide a few casual thrills for the Slayer aficionado, but deserves more credit for rising above novelty by treating the band's music with respect.
Customer Reviews
music of the spheres
Whether you are into Radiohead or The Section or neither of the above. this album will change the way you live. Listen while you are on your way, when you rise up and when you lie down. Music angry yet elegant. The lyrics suggested yet suppressed. Here you'll find melodic brilliance of Radiohead multiplied by the rigor and force of a centuries-old form. This music will wind its way into your thoughts and motions and you will one day realize you have been mysteriously altered.
A Haunting Requiem
I had only recently discovered the Vitamin String Quartet as I was searching for 'In Rainbows,' and simply from listening to the thirty-second bit of "Airbag" I knew I must get the album. While it is common that many complain that Radiohead is not on iTunes (and thus rate anything that resembles it as low as possible), the melodies reproduced by this group reflect Thom Yorke and co's dark yet brilliant nature in every way. Any Radiohead fan can point out that the group's vocals and music are not separate entities, but (unlike many musical groups) are woven together: Thom's voice is heard through the violin and cello, and blends seamlessly with the rest of the work. Vibrato and masterful bow work provides the shakiness and cutting emotion that drives most of their songs (especially "Paranoid Android"), and I'm sure that the original artists would be proud to hear these compositions.
Strung Out (OK Computer style)
This entire record is exceedingly haunting and beautiful, but the cello melody on "No Surprises" will break your heart. A fitting tribute to a class album.
